Dana 24 Speedometer Gears

Post by Eric46 »

I am looking for the speedometer driven gear. The gear that came out of my truck (1970 F-250 4x4) is a steel shaft with the nylon driven gear pressed on (no c-clip). The gear is black with 20 teeth.

No luck with any of the vendors...they all carry the nylon gear that clips onto the speedometer cable. Haven't had any luck with speedometer shops or transmission shops, both local and internet searches. Some of the shops recall this style of driven gear, but none have seen one in a long time.

Thoughts?

Is there a way to retrofit the clip on style gear?

Thanks

Might want to look into the similarity of a Dana 20 transfer case gear...they look similar....does anyone know if they are interchangable?

I have an all steel 18 tooth gear from my old Dana 24 if that will work for you it's yours for shipping. If you want to try to get the interchangeable gears to work PM me and we can see if i can use my gear as a pattern to come up with a shaft that will do the job.

Eric I'm sorry I didn't get back to you,the dana 24's gear is larger in dia. than the the later Ford gears are I got that far and promptly forgot all about it.We had just moved into a new to us house that was unfinished inside and I've been completely adsorbed in that
I've since acquired a Jeep Dana 20 and will see if thay use the same gear if so that might give you a source for one.

The D-20 is the same design but smaller overall :(
I "think" your best bet if you plan to keep the truck would be to keep on the lookout for a np 205 and swap out the D-24 the 205 will be supported for a long time :2cents:

Steve,

Thanks again for checking. I ended up buying another D-24 as I needed a couple of gears to replace the chewed up ones in my original box. On the plus side, it had good speedo gears.

The rebuild was straight forward...shop manual directions were good...used the rebuild kit from Bronco Graveyard. Built a cradle/stand for the transmission jack to get the D-24 out and not drop it on my body. Fun project.

Thanks

As you have rebuilt it you should be good to go,my D-24 had north of 500,000 hard miles on it when I rebuilt it there a good case as it's first 22 years it was a ranch truck.
The only reason I replaced it when i did was i ended up with a 205 from a parts truck i bought for the D-44 front with discs during the Cummins swap and wanted to add a 203 under drive to the mix.

Steve,

That's good to hear. Did you run 75W-90 in it...or your 205?

I haven't taken a super good look at it yet but the Dana 24 seemed at quick glance to be like the Dana 200 used in Jeep M715s.(opposite side front driveshaft)

I'm going to have to pass on my Highboy, but here's a list with photos of most speedo gears and ratio adapters as well as forward and backward 90 degree cable adapters.
