Backup lamps not working

Post by shortbedCUSTOM »

Well, after sorting out my taillight issue it's time to move on to the backup lamps. I've read thru quite a few threads on here about how to remedy this and most of the threads point to the safety neutral switch, but after looking into my truck I became aware that my truck doesn't have a safety neutral switch. I've looked at the end of the column (engine bay), and under the dash. I don't see it. Is there somewhere else it could be?

My truck is a '68 Ranger. 302 with an automatic. Column shift.

Agreed, it's really obvious. When I was looking for mine because the lights came on between P and R, I set my parking brake and moved the gear selector while looking under the dash... then proceeded to slap myself in the forehead when I realized how obvious it was and hadn't needed to go through all that.

  well after a little closer inspection, and a better flashlight, there is a rectangular cut out on the top of the column about 6-8" from the firewall.

That's the mounting holes in the steering column for the neutral safety switch.

Related question: Is my neutral safety switch only supposed to allow the truck to start in Neutral, or is it also supposed to work in Park? Because my truck only starts in Neutral (1971 F-350 DRW) which isn't a big deal, it passed inspection anyway, and it's sort of like an anti-theft ignition kill switch in that no one seems to know that it works that way until I tell them, but because I'm lazy and a creature of habit I'd like to be able to start it in Park if I could.

Should start in park also. Try holding up on your shift arm while you try to start it. If it starts, the NSS needs adjusting. If not, suspect a wiring issue.
