1967 f100 running lights

Post by randyvines »

I have all lights operational but when I pull the switch from running lights to head lights the running lights go out does this sound like it warrants a switch replacement?

I had hoped that that was the case, Electrically this old truck is remarkable and it just seemed out of place that this particular item was an issue. My 14 year old and I will feel much more confident taking in for inspection. We are on a journey building this for his first vehicle. Thanks

The '67-'69 pickups' parking lights are designed to turn off whenever the headlights are on. Beginning in '70, due to 'new' Federal safety regulations, a wiring change made the parking lights stay on with the headlights. The change was in the wiring harness, not in the headlight switch, which remained the same from the previous year and also by going to a dual-filament socket with the front parking lights. You can add a simple jumper wire between two terminals at the headlight switch harness to accomplish this on a '67-'69 truck.

Keith, I think you're wrong about this. :hmm:

If the parking lights and turn signals were in the same light, the socket would have been dual-filament all along. Should take an 1157 bulb.

Correct me if I'm wrong!! :?

its a dual filament bulb. just on the 67-69s the wiring harness is slightly different.

Ive actually been pulled over due to this cause of no front park lights. after a little explaining and showing the officer that they infact do work perfectly fine i was let go with no ticket.

:yt: and :yt: They have always had a dual-filament bulb. That is why you can just jumper it like in that diagram and it will make them stay on all the time.

So I just want some clarification before I try this. The jumper wire should be done on the headlight switch wiring socket.... The back of it... So the wire should be pushed into the back of the socket and contact the "plugs" of the brwn and blk/yllw wires?

I'm a visual kind of guy so actual photos of the mod would be great.

i think the best way might be to use a flat spade connector on each end of the jumper and stuff it down in the plug slots with the other connector.

:yt:

I did this a year or so ago, because it annoyed me that it went off and the more lights I have on the truck, the better. Though there is a dual filament, there's a reason at the time they were called PARKING lights. They were more for marking purposes than any kind of fog-light type function.

Using Keith's diagram, I did exactly what fordman suggested... made about a 3" jumper with spade end at each end, then jammed it into each of the appropriate slots. I found one slot was a little loose, so I used my needle-nose pliers to give it a slight "bow". That worked perfectly. Results were this...
