19 67 f100 cab roof rust fix

Post by daveford72 »

Just thought I would share how I fixed a spare cab that had a rusted roof. I was just tinkering with how to do this.

I cut out all rusted and body puddy areas, fixed rusted brace in cab, then welded small plates from left over project scraps from roof to drip rail.Ground welds smooth, then applied body filler to level out and sprayed primer. I have not used this cab its still sitting in the field. I makes it look like a 73-79 cab. just thought I would share.

Nice to see someone tackling the dreaded drip rail cancer - very innovative way to go about it too. Looks sweet

Thanks, was looking at different ways to fix this roof. I did not want to take the roof off 2 fix it. The P.O. put LOTS of fiberglass and bondo in it. When you cut this out like that, the roof skin is not supported well. make sure you have it straight when welding plate on!

I am starting my restore of my dad's ol 1964 f100. Looks like i may be employing some of the technique that you used for your roof rust cut out and weld in replacement. Yours looks great, but not sure if i want to cut my drip rails yet. If they are rusted through as well, then its an easier decision to shave them off.

Here is what my guy looks like.

On mine the previous owner filled in the rusted area with Bondo. My drip rail and gutter was ok, just the roof and some of the brace was rusted. The roof on my 63 F 250 is starting to rust along the sides above the door and in the center up front :( I've owned it for about 30 years now, it some how keeps getting put on the back burner!  Has a 312 3 speed on the floor. Make sure you cover your windsheild good when you weld. That spatter will pit the glass! Be sure to post pics of your process and good luck with your project!

@Daveford72 My roof repairs 1964 F100 roof are underway finally. Grinded down the area all the way around and found a lot of bondo in mine too about 1.5 in strip of it. Drip rails are mostly ok, and will keep at it til this is done.

I’ve already replaced the gastank and got the engine running well, next gonna address the cab floor/floorpans, and then add a power brake booster, front disk brake conversion, rear drum parts clean up and replace the drums, add new gearbox, pitman arm, rag joint, and power steering pump (I’ve ordered all the parts from CPP Autoparts in California).

Lots of Summertime fun ahead.

Mine has a couple spots working through from the inside. Sooner or later I'll be taking it apart for repairs. I thank leaking window seals for letting the carpet get soaked which results in condensation forming on the roof and trickling down to the drip rails to rust through.

Good times.
