Im determined to replace these cab mounts

Post by magic bus »

Like alot of others out there, My front cab mounts are shot. The engine is already out and at the machine shop. After taking a hard look and re evaluating the cab mount status I removed the front clip.

I ordered replacements today from Dennis Carpenter.

I started drilling out the welds today with a spot weld drill bit.

Some pics of both sides.

I was planning on welding the new ones back in. I do have to patch a couple of spots on the floor where they attach. Im not a very good welder. I do have a mig welder. I was wondering if anybody on here ever used panel bond and glued them on? If so how would you get the clamping force? Bolts? rivets? Just a thought.

As structural components, I strongly discourage the use of panel adhesive for cab mounts. Bad idea.

Did the mounts have access covers? It doesn't seem so given how bad those look.

You can bolt or weld them in. I cab mounts in many of my trucks, I have used both methods. Weld mig and stick or Bolts I put 5/16 or 3/8 carriage bolts about 9 per mount. I agree with HIO definitely no adhesive. :2cents:

So bolting as the only fastening method is acceptable? No tack or supporting welds needed? I'm liking that option

All the more reason to jump in and try. Go slow, don't try to do long welds at first, keep the gaps tight (have a hammer close by to "persuade" the section you're working on to cooperate as you go), and make sure everything is bright clean metal because you can't weld on rust. The only thing that raises your skill level is practice, and Ford and Mother Nature have kindly conspired to provide you with something to practice on

I agree - no panel adhesive on structural sections like cab mounts.

So one of my friends suggested drilling holes in the new mounts and filling in the welds in those areas ie so you would have a similar look to the factory spot welds. Is that what you guys are implying or are you guys saying that it should be welded around the perimiter?

I work full time so I only have limited time to work on this thing. Im making progress got one about halfway off.

It depends how much you eventually have to weld. If drilling out the spot welds to remove the corrosion is all you need to do, just reattach them in the same way. Drill through the new panel and plug weld the hole up, making sure you hit the metal behind. It's really not that hard to do with a MIG welder.

Looking forward to see your progress :)

YES!

They are teardrop shaped (upside down). Each is attached with a tang which hooked over the bottom of the opening and the top secured with a 3/8-inch headed screw.

I believe the reason for that corrosion is from the missing plates and the road spray always getting in there. And these trucks barely had a toothpaste tube's worth of seam sealer and undercoating.

Below is a pic from when I was tearing down my '70:

It cleaned up rather well after tons of elbow grease!

That looks fantastic HIO Mine won't be that nice. We had a misunderstanding about the access covers. They were in place.

Where the bolt hole was you could put your fist through it.

On to the other side!

Well Im moving along. Got the other side off. I can't imagine changing these with the engine in and the front clip on. WOW. My hat is off to you guys that have changed them that way. It got me to thinking. If you took your truck somewhere and said replace my cab mounts. Im thinking the bill would be well over a $1000. This is a time consuming job with alot of potential for complications.

Driver side:
cab mount8.JPG
Both old mounts and both new ones. Amazing that the old ones were rusted through TWO layers of metal at the bottom!
cab mount7.JPG
Now I have to repair the floor where the lower part attatched. Serious rust there. I bought this truck because the body looked so nice the day I bought it. It was however parked at a place where it was very difficult to see up underneath it. Weeds six foot high , garbage cans, lawn chairs, misc junk of all kinds stacked all around it. The rust on the underside has been disturbing. But I still like the truck. As a new found neighbor down the street said about one of his bump sides "It just kind of turns me on" :D

So I guess the answer is drill to fit? The new mounts don't have any holes for the bolts to go through the mounts. Correct?
