Other options for gas filler location?

Postby mrtleavitt on Fri Nov 06, 2009 2:54 am

He guys I'm going to install an after axle gas tank on the '69 which now actually has a '74 frame. I'm trying to figure out a place to mount the filler that will be clean and as hidden as possible. The truck is fully restored so I'm not going to put a door in the side of the bed and the bed has rhino lining so I don't want to cut up the inside of the bed either. Have any of you guys seen a good looking, clean install? I was thinking of tucking it in the fender well some how out of site. Any ideas?

Not sure of a nice alternative to the two you listed.  I plan a bed floor one.  I saw one tucked in the fender well one time, but it really wasnt my favorite.  How did everything line up on the newer frame?  I have heard this is a rough swap.

Everything lined up great other than the bed. I moved the leaf springs forward two inches but the bed didn't sit flat on the frame. The frame has a pretty good hump to it over the axle and it hits the bottom of the bed rather than the bed brace. Now that it's all done it's awesome but now knowing how to do it, I wouldn't do it again.

Not wanting to put a door on the outside or the inside of the bed pretty much limits your options. However, I'd be a little leery about just hanging it out in the fenderwell, due to the dust, mud and other road debris that'll get thrown up. It would seem to me that every time you go to fill up, you'll have to really clean off the cap area first to make sure you don't drop some of that debris down into the tank.

If using a Mustang tank the tank would have to be mounted very low to get the filler behind the plate. There aren't too many options when using a Mustang tank.
