1972 XLT Factory AC, How much

Post by SmokeyBear »

Hi folks, I've got a '72 XLT Ranger with Factory AC. I'm removing it to replace it with a new aftermarket system. How much is the old system worth? I'll have the evap case, all the lines, compressor, dryer, and condenser all in good shape for sale. I'll be keeping the factory switchplate on the dash as I will be retrofitting it to control the new unit. I'll also keep the compressor bracket and mount the new compressor to it. Thoughts? Thanks.

Retired 35+ year HVAC tech that's been building and working on our trucks longer than that.
Maybe post some pics as to the condition of all the parts before getting any decent quote on what they are worth. They are obsolete hard to find parts but if the plastic is cracked / dry rotted / broken mounting ears / and if the evap or condenser coil fins are rotting or it has a leaking tube end / etc they don't do anyone much good. The suction and discharge refrigerant hoses from under the hood probably are dry rotted and leaking, (most major cities have hydraulic hose repair shops that can fabricate these-I fabricated them on a USN ship) but...they might help someone to ID what is needed to retrofit an existing non AC truck.

I'm not real sure if your existing York compressor mount will be of any use to you at all-as I believe all the newer retrofit AC systems for our bump era trucks use the newer Sanyo compressor with a totally different mount. :hmm:

Wow it all looks to be in really good shape, (even the condenser coil which is surprising). I'd ask for no less than a few hundred dollars for it all for sure-keeping mind the shipping will be costly for anyone. I'd also quickly get all the hose ends / compressor fittings / condenser fittings (anything that the refrigerant flows through) sealed up as contaminants are a refrigerant circuits worst enemy.
Is that a Sanyo compressor, (the new one)?

Mr Smokey, that looks good.
I hope you enjoy it for many years.

Would you post a link or tell where you got the new AC?

Thanks.

Thanks, yes I sealed up all the fittings and ends so that no contaminants could get in. I got the new system from Nostalgic AC Parts in Ocala Florida. The compressor is a sanden unit. It came with a simple bracket to mount to the York bracket. Everything fit perfectly. Here is the link...

I didn't need the pulley or the controller so the system was a bit over $1k shipped. George with NACP was great to deal with.

Hi Smokey
You say your using your factory cable control. The website says if you do that you lose floor heat. Are you giving that up or do you have a work-around?
