Ranger II air conditioning

Post by Steve302 »

Hello,
OK I know i will get yelled at for not having pics but my camera is dead, hopefully someone will have pics, or an a week or so i will get another camera.
My 70 bump has a small underdash a/c uniy similar to the dealer installed ones you would find, in the center of the unit it has a red circle that says RANGER II. it has fairly large chrome vents and is only 18" wide or so from end to end. anyone know anything about theese? parts? who made them?
Thanks, Steve

Interesting... the "Ranger II" was what they called the Ranger as we know it today... the small, light duty 1/4 ton pickup. Think "Bronco II", which had the same cab, interior, and engine, and you'll know what I mean. They started producing that truck in '82 or '83, I believe.

So what I don't understand is how a Ranger II A/C would fit in our trucks and remotely look right.

there shooould be some sort of tag on it someplace. maybe on the back or bottom of it. i doubt it has anything to do with the newer rangers. but it could i guess. is it broke or something what are you trying to find out about it?

The Ranger II was an aftermarket model name for those underdash A/C units that were being produced at the same time as our trucks, one of dozens of different varieties by different manufacturers, and the name has nothing to do with the Ranger II trucks. Heck, they weren't even a twinkle in the Ford engineer's eyes yet.

So on some of the a/c is said ranger right?

Well this one one mine http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb31 ... ure078.jpg

its in my 1971 Explorer Special custom A/c says ranger So I guess I have a 67 68 69 70 71 72

Still works to!! I've have about 6 to 10 people tell me that is really rare a/c and there the same ones that was on the mustangs!!

A guy told me its just a aftermarket dealer installed' Well when my family orderd it it came with that a/c so the line put it in not the dealer! Its just odd but for did the same thing with the mustangs!.

So any one know about my a/c?

Steve I have seen the a/c that said RangerII and one that said MarkII. But they had the curved with the dash!! from end to end! There out in my slavage yard I go to!!! And good thing im the only one they will let down with out any one!! I wonder if it woud be worth it to buy them.

While stranger things have happened, I have my doubts that underdash add-on A/C was installed at the factory, since they already had an 'integrated' A/C for use on the assembly line. Those add-on units would have required parts and modifications not normally done there. I'm not saying your family didn't order the truck with A/C....I'm just saying the truck was probably shipped to the dealer without the factory-style setup and the dealer was specifically instructed by them to install the add-on setup for your family.

One my my good friends in town had a friend that workd at ford from 67 to 90 someing. I talked to him about it today and he said when I was working on the line we did install some of the a/c like mine.Funny thing is he was on the line in 71 where my truck was made at  and he helped with the Explorer Special customs so he just might of help make my truck lol Small world!!! after all

I was thinking of when I got the truck some one told me they was there when it rolled of the truck! I just might have to see the dealer is still there.

Im going to look in to it more and see what I can come up with!

Thanks :fr:

i dont want to hijack this thread, but is this anything special? behind it is the factory heater. i gues the PO added the ac compressor and lines :dk: it says "frigette" so probably an aftermarket heater/ac.

I know exactly what you're talking about, my '67 CS has it. I'm looking for an original compressor to make it work, from what I can tell everything is there except for the compressor.
