Steering Wheel No More Cracks

Post by 69Ford »

Just finished this steering wheel. Was in rough shape with some nice size cracks in the normal spots. Used my Dremel tool to grind out the cracks until manageable then filled in with JB Weld leaving slightly raised then sanded until I was happy with results. Painted and here it is.

Here it is before removal. Wish I had taken better pics of the cracks. I always forget to take beforehand pics :nono: Just found a picture of fixed crack before cleaning and painting.

This is my second one. The first one still looks like new about 2000 miles, two years old.

Horn Ring.JPG
Here's with horn ring and restored upper bearing housing turn signal. It looks like time to order parts. Gear shift indicator and horn ring center emblem. Working my way from top to bottom :hd:

Nice work. Wondered about what would be a good way to rebuild these steering wheels. May have to try it on one of mine.

Looks good  What did you paint it with? I repaired mine but have not had a chance to abuse it on the road.

I used Napa Brand TEC Trim Black rattle can. Before I'm done I may bring it to a body shop and have it clear coated with satin finish. The last steering wheel I did was painted with automotive paint with extra hardener seems to hold up just fine.

That is awesome! I have an extra SW that I can experiment on too! Have you ever seen the tutorial on youtube on how to fix a padded dash, in pretty much the same way? Was wondering if that is where you got the idea to do that to your SW. All the cracks were dremeled out pretty wide and deep, filled em in with some kind of plastic welding strips, then filled with spot putty. After sanding smooth he sprayed the dash pad with ruberized undercoating, then primer, then a nice satin black. Looked like brand new Made in America!!! :fr:

Sorry 69Ford, I need to do a quick :hj: Want to give a long time no see to robroy.

robroy I haven't seen you post in a while and good to see you are still around. Have been hoping to see a post from you about how #50 has been doing. If you would sometime give us old timers a update on how you and your bump have been the past few years.

Hijack over
