LMC Insulated ABS Plastic Firewall Covers

Postby Fastbackin1970 on Tue Oct 13, 2009 9:32 am

I need to replace the one on my 1972 Ford F100. Has anyone done this? What is the quality of this particular part from LMC? Is it a pain in the butt to replace?

Thanks!

I have looked at this for a while now. I would think it would be a pretty good project since just about everything under the dash would have to be removed. I wonder what the cover itself looks like being ABS. That is my main concern. If it is hard and shiny I don't want it and will use black carpet.

I put one in my truck this past July. They are shiny black plastic, but not hard and rigid. they do bend and have some give to them. They are backed with fiberglass insulation. The holes for bolts, steering column. and gas pedal are cut out. There was a bit of minor trimming involved, but not much.
You are correct when you say these are a PIA to install! You basically have to strip the firewall of all components, but you will not have to remove the wiper assembly. It's a lot of work to do this, but IMHO it's well worth it!

I bought one too, just didn't get a chance to install it before I had to put my projects into storage. Like flyboy stated, these are a soft flexible plastic and appear very durable. They're a very nice upgrade from the cardboard pieces, and should last indefinitely.

yep im going to be doing the 69's firewall and kick panels in carpet that matches the floor once i get it because it makes it look all warm and cozy :D . Nothing wrong with a plastic firewall cover but carpet is way cheap as well.

How is San Antonio these days. We live in Live Oak for a couple of years while in the Air Force. Austin before that.
Sure miss it. If ya'll get fed up enough and make Texas your own country I might try and move back. lol

We didn't do so well back in 1836-1845 when we were our own country.  I wouldn't hold your breath!
