Some F100 4x4 Questions

Post by F1004x4 »

I am a new to the world of 67-72 Ford trucks and I have some questions about my F100. It's a 68 F100 swb, it came with a mid-70s 302 welded in place of the original 240-6. It has a 9 rear with 3:70s and 44 front and a manual 4-speed that I believe is original. First off what tranny would I have? Secondly I would like 2 lift the truck about 4 inches and throw on some 33s-will the single speed tcase hold up' if not what would be the easiest and most reliable way 2 go? Also when the motor was swaped the guy moved the mouts back about 3-4 inches and poorly welded them 2 the frame. What do you think would be the best way 2 keep the 302 and put the perches in thier original spot?

Any info would be great
Thanks

my wife has the single speed tc in her f100 4x4, works fine but the truck has stock wheels and tires.
since the 4x4 came with only the 6 or an FE there is no correct way for a 302 to be installed, the person doing it must find the best way to fab it in.

my wifes has the fe and a np 435 trans, reverse is right and back toward the seat.

any change to other transfer cases would require fabricating brackets to hold it up, as i have no idea if the f250 t case mounting crossmember would fit into a f100 frame.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

What would swapping in an FE require?

that would depend on what was done to install the 302 and the removal and proper repositioning of the mounting towers. i would guess that the 302 was used because it bolts up to the 6 bell housing.i can take a pic of the wifes truck and you can see how it is from the factory.

The 302 was installed by moving the mounts back 4-5 inches and welding them to the frame. Any pics would be great.

this is what i found today:
wifes f100 4x4 has same bolt in towers as f250 4x4, yours must have been unbolted and moved back and welded on.
if you want to put an FE in, you will need to remove the welded towers and get some from another 4x4 if after removing yours they are unusable due to the welding.
you cannot move the towers back to the original spot and use a 302.

sorry no pics, digi cam needs batteries charged again.

I can remove the towers as they are poorly welded, I have access to a 76 F250 4x4 with a 390 do you know if that motor will drop in?

Thanks

yes,you will need the bell housing too from the FE.also the starter.
the trans will bolt up to the bell on either engine so no issues with that.

I have a 71 f100 4x4 sport custom . It came with a 360FE engine/NP 435 transmission/and a single speed Dana 21 transfer case. It also sported a big bearing 31 spline axle shaft 9" in the rear and a drum dana 44 up front. I swapped in a 390 Fe engine/an NP435/NP 205 Transmission/tcase . I also swapped in a Dana 44 hi pinion with disc brakes out of a 76' f100 4x4. I gave her a 4' lift and 33's at all four corners. I added power brakes and power steering. Check out my galleries. Since I have added a roll cage and a one ton rear leaf shackle flip. Soon to come is a flatbed and d60 front and either a d70 rear or a 10.5 " raer dif and 42's.
