Factory locker options for bumpside F-100 4x4

Post by averagef250 »

I'm considering purchasing an F-100 4x4. I can't inspect the truck as it's far away, but the owner can haul it to me as I'm on his hauling route. Supposedly the truck was owned by a military base. It's beat to heck bodywise, but runs good, it has really low gearing and when the hubs are locked in all four tires always spin. The seller states that nobody who owned it would have welded the diffs or fooled with them otherwise and it must have lockers, but he won't pull the covers and the diff tags are missing. SO I'm curious if ford offered detroit lockers as an option in both the front and rear of an F-100 4x4 in a bumpside?

So far as I know, Ford offered a limited slip in the rear axle only for production vehicles. There were 2 versions; the early Equa-Lock and the later Trac-Lock. I think the transition occured around 1969.

If the truck was a special order military rig, there's no telling what kind of axles are under it.

I agree. Ford only put the clutched lockers in the rear.

I've owned a number of 16 spline 60 detroit lockers. Thought ford may have offered lockers factory. The price for the whole truck wouldn't buy just the pair of axles alone and he'll deliver it for free. I'll probably just go for it and hope for the best when I pull the covers. Crossing my fingers they're not farm welded.

I've found some really strange stuff in every forrest service or fleet owned bumpside I've had. This will be the first military owned rig I've had.

military trucks were made by ford to military specs,a lot of the factory stuff was within specs but anything extra that was not would be added to match specs. i would not think it to be welded but a locker that was available at the time that was added to front and rear axles.
curious to know as we have an f100 4x4 here.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.
