Sounds like the dimmer switch to me... or a ground. Dimmer switch is like 9 bucks at any autoparts store.

Easy fix.

Do you have halogen headlights? If so, install a relay switch. If not, check dimmer switch, headlight switch, bad ground or short. Most likely dimmer switch because you say it happens on high beam and seldom on low beam.

The headlight switch has a built-in circuit breaker, which is what sounds like is causing your lights to cycle off and on. Too much current is flowing through the switch and tripping the circuit breaker, which then resets and then the cycle repeats. Like DuckRyder stated, halogens take more juice and could very possibly overload the switch, which is why you should use the remote relay.

You can easily build a relay controled headlight circuit in an afternoon with 20bucks worth of materials. Radio shack has the needed single pole relays for 6 bucks.

Basicly the stock wiring and switch only has to handle the few milliamps to trigger the relay. Then a direct fused circuit from the battery is closed giving max voltage to the lights. Really makes a difference on these older trucks, and even the newer ones where ford skimps on the wiring gauge size.

Here is a diagram I designed.

If needed I can do a full photo writeup on the harness build or go into more depth of relay operation.
