old stock king pin set

Post by dtcohen »

My 68 f100 needs new kingpins and bushings. I ran across this ebay listing for an old stock set of pins and bushings. What are your thoughts? The price is apealing. Is this the right set for my truck?

Those are them. But that’s pretty much same price as new.

Honestly? Spend the extra money and buy new ones. Some of those parts will need cleaning up to remove rust and corrosion before installing, especially the bushings.

I ended up buying new ones from rockauto. I would like to go ahead and find a set of disc brake spindles to use as well.

I ended up finding a set of '74 disc brake spindles on my local Craigslist. Wound up costing me $175 but made the swap simple.

Did you just swap the 74 spindles onto your I-beams? In the article on this website it mentions swapping spindles and I-beams as a set, but if the spindles are a direct swap then I don't see the need to purchase I beams as well.

Just spindles. '73-'74 used the same king pins as '67-'72 and are a direct bolt in. I highly recommend getting them reamed and new bushings installed while they're out. My machine shop blasted, reamed, bushed and assembled my spindles and I-beams for $100, I supplied the parts. If you can get the dust shields grab them too. They can be hard to find. I lucked out and found NOS but still had to buy the LH from one place and the RH from another. Everything else is available at your local parts store.

I picked up a set of 73 spindles, dust shields, calipers, and brake hose frame brackets yesterday. I paid $385 which seemed a little high, but they were already pulled from the truck, so that has to be worth a little.

Good deal. Maybe a bit pricey but given the rarity of actually finding them well worth it. The brake line brackets are a real find. The calipers are available new and remanufactured at your local parts store and not expensive. I'd go ahead and replace them, they probably need work anyway.

I may be over thinking this, but I know the tie rod area of the 73 spindles is thicker than the 68 spindles. My plan is to go ahead and replace all the tie rods. Will my 68 pitman arm work or will I need a pitman arm from a 73 truck?

Did you grind the spindles where the tie rod connects?
