F100 and a cab over camper

Post by Soonersteve »

OK, I have a 1975 F100 4x4 shortwide. Thinking about getting a cab over camper or a pop-up 4x4 camper, but I only have about 700 lbs left in my GVWR. What would I need to do to make this happen?
New leaf-springs?
airbag system?
etc...

Thanks for taking the time and helping a guy out.

Id go with a pop up, or something light. you dont have alot of room to work within, i would do add a leafs like hellwigs or something over air bags. air bags dont like articulation off road if sagging becomes a concern.

Thanks 1972hiboy! Any suggestions on leafs, or just any old springs off a donor highboy will do?

I would find a local spring shop and have them re-arch and bush your springs as needed and add the leaves needed to carry the weight you want it to :2cents:

To be honest i am not sure if highboy springs would go onto a f100. I think they are a different spring. re-arcing would be the better repair. but bolt on add a leafs are an option too.

Not really the greatest host for the duty but... Up rate the sway bars, add a steering stabilizer. Re bush the springs and make sure everything it tight in the steering and it should be OK. Don't overload it and try to keep the weight down low.

I'd also do a late model EFI / 5 speed swap with discs and PS up front.
