Rear axle Y block question

Post by pawpaws67 »

I am stumped. There is what looks like a brake line coming out of the rear portion (on the right in the pic) of the axle Y block (distribution block?) that isn't hooked to anything. I can't find anything underneath the truck that looks like it was supposed to attach to. I took a look at the hydraulic brake technical diagrams from the 67-72 2wd F-100s and there is the line marked 4A049 that also doesn't go to anything. Can anybody shed some light on this for me? Thanks in advance.

That's a breather line for the rear end - holds the block for the brakes onto the axle and lets any pressure buildup escape from the housing - it doesn't hook to anything.........I think the open end is held onto the underside of the truck with a clip - can't remember what to because its been a while since I've been under mine..... :D

Well, I definitely feel a little foolish then. It's definitely hooked to the frame with a clip. Thank you Ohiotinkerer.

The vent hole is pretty small.
If you ever have a pinion seal leak , make sure the vent is open .
I've cured a leak or two this way.

Thank you cep62, I noticed the end of it was pretty plugged up with a dirt dobbers' nest and the pinion seal is leaking. I was hoping it was leaking from me dropping the drive shaft and then using a tow bar to drag it 1400 miles. Hopefully, unplugging that will stop the leak. I wonder which one would be more likely to cause the leak?
