steering box loose at frame? 1969 f250 2wd

Post by brkdncr »

Looks like i need to weld up some sort of reinforcement to the frame to keep the steering box from moving around. Anyone have a resource for this?

Posting this comment from ford-trucks.com in case someone comes across it in the future.
Inside the frame there is a "V" shaped piece that keeps the frame from crushing when the steering box is tightened. It sounds like the frame is cracked around the perimeter of the bolt pattern. The steering box has to come off and the out side of the frame has to be "fish plated" and re drilled. On the inside you cannot add any metal where the box contacts the frame but probably everywhere else, so it must be welded where the cracks are.

I wasn't able to get the greatest photos but i don't see any cracks. It was just me so i couldn't see how much movement there is when rotating the steering wheel. Here are a bunch of photos i was able to get.

With the hood and door open I can stand beside the truck and move the steering wheel while looking at the box. That's how I figured out mine was blown. You should be able to do the same.
