King Pins 1972 Ford F100

Post by jlb »

Questions. 1972 Ford F100. When I hit my brakes my truck wants to turn hard left. I've had two different guys look at it.. Both say brakes are fine. Second guys says that I need a new drivers side king pin. Does this sound like it could be correct? The truck goes straight down the road with no vibrations or any other problems. Frist time I hit the brakes on a new day - its the worst then seams to get better as the drive goes on.

any thoughts?

If I need king pins, any thing else I should have them look at while it's at the shop?

Thanks in advance.

King pins are supposed to be in good condition; anything other than that invites all kinds of issues.

Did the guys checking the brakes look at the wheel cylinders and rubber flex line ?
or just the shoes?

When it goes straight and pulls when you hit the brakes it seems like brakes . :2cents:

Now that's not saying your king pins aren't bad , but not the main cause of your problem.

I'm not sure. I'll someone look again. On the Flex line? Check for Leaks?

thank you

That, but also they can collapse inside and restrict pressure, or hold pressure to the brake.
and I've seen wheel cylinders that are sized up and won't move.

Thank you... The parts aren't very much.. I'll just buy them for both sides and have someone install..

Wants to pull to the left means front right brake is not working. Nowadays you can take what the mechanics say with a grain of salt.

Another invisible culprit in addition to the flexible hoses can be the master cylinder.
The seals inside them can go bad with sediment/rust, and cause the seals to allow a bypass of the brake fluid

Yeah, kingpins would cause it to pull all the time as well as wander around some. Go back through the brakes, make sure the preload is the same on both as well as make sure they are both bled well.

Mr JLB, try jacking the front end off the ground ( make sure it is safe) , with hands on 6 & 12 o'clock, press top & lift up on bottom of the tire.
There should be some play in the king pins if they are wore, at least mine did.
If you or some one can look under the front end & watch to see if there are play , not only in the king pins , but watch to see if there is play anywhere in the front end.
Turn the steering wheel all the way left & right.
Spin your tires by hand & see if they spin freely.
Look at the side wall of the tires to make sure nothing has been scrubbing.
If you notice any play at all, replace with new parts.
Makes our old bumps drive like a dream.

Good luck
