1967 brake pedal/booster questions

Post by element7878 »

I've decided to swap out my 67 pedal for a 68-72 pedal. The 67 pedal seems to sit a good amount higher than the other bumps I have seen and has an inconvenience of having to lift your leg up pretty high in order to hit the brakes. I read in the TECH section that the 67 booster/master cylinder isn't compatible with the 68-72 pedal. I picked up a new pedal out of a 68-69 pickup and purchased a new booster/master combo from advance auto parts. So now for the questions...the master cylinder rod I got from advance looks a lot different than my existing one...do I have the wrong one? Also will the booster linkage that is attached to my current booster work with the new pedal? Do I need the linkage...I'm kind of confused on how this is suppose to convert...any help is appreciated...thanks...I'm also going to try to attach some photos.

After reading more in the tech section, I'm thinking somebody had installed a 73+ setup on my truck...my truck has the bracket that raises the master cylinder and has the canti lever linkage that goes from the booster to the brake pedal...so now I'm curious if it has been running 4 wheel drums on a drum/disc master cylinder setup...would that work? Would it cause problems?

My '67 has the brackets that raise the booster on the firewall, but not the cantlever push rod to the pedal. I just got a new '67 booster, with the hope that I can mate it to a '68 master cylinder for a disc/drum combo. As I understand it, you can use a disc/drum MC with a drum/drum setup, but not vice-versa. Also, the proportioning valve on the frame is different for drum/drum vs disc/drum.

Not sure if this helped any. Post photos.

I got that same setup for my 71 that's in the pic and got everything for a 75 f100, because I have front disc.

I'm doing the same thing to my 67.Im using the booster from a 73 doner truck with 74 front I-beams and disc brakes. The plunger on the booster was longer than my old master cylinder so I welded a piece of plate on the back side of the pedal arm and drilled a hole for it to bolt into and so for it seems to be working out good.Ive got to get a new MC because the doner one wasn't any good but I'll post pics and let you know how well it works.
