F-250 4x4 steering box needle roller bearing upgrade

Post by eggman918 »

Yesterday I started the rebuild of the steering box on my '68 F-250 4x4 it's the last original component on my truck with over 750,000 miles
After tearing it down it's not surprising it lasted as long as it did it was defiantly over built the only "weak link" is the bushings on the Pittman arm shaft
but that is an easy fix,I'm replacing the bushings with Torrington needle roller bearings. Two bearings and lip seals will run about $30.00, to do this requires that a new cover is made and the bushing bore in the housing needs to be bored out ~ .062" I thing it will take about 4 hours of machining to do. The box will even clear the ways in my 10" lathe so setup is simple  as long as it lasted last time this should be a "forever fix"!
I will post blow by blow pics as soon as I'm done, bearings won't be here until next week so I'll try to get pics up to the point on reassembly this weekend

Housing in lathe ready to bore for bearing Iwas wrong before when I stated that it was .062" that needed to come out it's .125" on the Dia. so .062" on a side
the bearings are a B-228 and a B-2216 the seal is a 340853 and I plan to use two one to keep oil in and one reversed to keep crap out
100_2116.JPG
I tapped out a piece of cardboard to make a pattern to shape the outside of cover

The end result

The seal # I listed earlier was wrong,it will fit but it is thicker than the ones i am using.
I am using #50480-S they are .187" thick so two should fit back to back so a lip will be facing both ways.

next is pressing the bearings, the short one is shown as it gives the best view but it's the same for both
100_2139.JPG
Here it is in the cover it's flush with the face and their is about 3/32" between bottom of bearing and bore
100_2141.JPG
The long bearing is flush with the bore on the inside of case

Now it's time to set the position of the shaft and bearings the 1/2"-20 stud is for shaft position and thrust load. And locked in place with the jam nut.

Top balls and race

100_2152.JPG
My box had 3 .010" shims so I went back with that amount of preload I would have liked a bit more preload bit .010" was too much so I left it as is I didn't have any material to make a new one.

here the worm is in and cover is sealed and tight.
100_2153.JPG
here the other shaft/cover are in place
100_2154.JPG
here it's ready to go back in truck I added a hose to the vent to keep out water during deep crossings, all my other vents are at least 48" off the ground but I never thought about the steering box
100_2155.JPG
The truck has never had as nice "feel" in the steering as it does now this project was worth the time and money :2cents:
With 2-3 hours of machine shop time to bore box and machine new cover this project is easy enough that anyone could do it...........there were no surprises in it.
