Steering Box replaced - now a squeeky column?

Post by alvald83 »

I had a shop replace my (Bendix)steering box and now i am getting a rubbing type sound from my column when i turn the wheel left. I just wanted to get some opinions before i take it back to have it checked out. 1969 F250, power steering. Thanks Al

I had a similar experience, years ago I had a shop replace the p/s gear, it then made what seemed like a grinding noise. It turned out to be a slight misalignment between the steering shaft and the ragjoint coupler, the rubber donut was causing the noise.
I loosened the steering column under the dash, and the firewall bracket on the engine side, was able to align it better and the noise went away.
A mechanic's stethoscope or a length of hose might help you to isolate the noise.
