truck leans to the right 1"

Post by danno »

Need a little help,I put new coil springs on the front of my truck( 69 f-100 with 300 six 4speed) it was leaning about 1/2 to the right when I started.I put the new coils in and now its leaning 1" to the right.I put the coil that side drivers side on the drivers side some people say I should have put that coil on the passengers side.Anyway what else could make it lean so much to the right and what is the fix for this problem.I see they sell spacers for under the coil spring will this cure the problem and do you put just one on the left side to make it level. Thanks Danno :help:

is it the suspension making it look like its leaning or a bad cab mount or something like that?

Weak rear springs can give you the illusion of the truck leaning too. If the springs on the front and back were sagging, simply replacing the fronts isn't going to help much.

If you're saying that your new springs were marked as to the sides they were to be installed in, and you did install them correctly and it still leans, and your body bushings/mounts and in good shape, as well as the rear springs, then I guess I'd just shim the springs like the factory suggested in a TSB. Here's a shot of the lower spring cup with one of the shims. The TSB said you can use up to 2 per side, as needed.

...and here's a shot of how it would look installed.

See that transmission mount etc offset to the passenger side? :)
Ford put a stiffer spring on the passenger side for that reason.
In theory it sounds good but in practice it didn't work out for me.
YMMV

I got another set of heavy springs from the wreckin yard and
took the heavier of the two and used it with the heavier one of
the set I had. My heavy set were installed under warranty and
they tried talking me out of them saying...
"they'll make it ride like a lumber wagon :("
Without hesitation I told 'em...
"sounds good! that's what I want! :) -lumber wagon springs-! :)"
One of the best dangged things I ever did to my pickup. LOL :)

Anyway, you can re-arch your own leaf springs, the thinner ones
a 10# sledge works good but when I got to the 5/8" overload leaf
the 10# wouldn't "move" it, so bought a 16# head, put a handle in
it and that worked great. A good work out in the process. ;)
That crookedass truck can't beat you! ;)
(unless you let it;)

(4+1/4 inch "ride height" -Ford's words)

A trick is to only re-arch the overload spring to match the rest of
the pack. Anyone interested in the "how to" on that? The idea is
it makes the rear end not "buck" so dangged much.

Wimpy springs are what causes it to be bouncy. Believe it?
Shocks can't fix wimpy springs. ;)

Read where the plastic pads get sand in them and aren't any
better than metal on metal. {shrug}

Ford sez to keep 'em oily. BTDT and it sucks.
Oil (even STP) works great for a 500(?) miles or so, but that's it.

ps- what's the spacing on 2wd bump-side axle spring perches? :)
pps- my 2wd dent side is 44+3/4" center to center.
