72 f100 3 on the tree

Post by Krice623 »

My father in law is restoring his 1971 Ford F100 and it has a column shift 3 speed. He can't figure out how to adjust it properly. I've searched the internet and can only find a Chevy 3speed adjustment video. They look very similar but tighten differently. PLEASE . Any advice would help

Welcome to the site.

I would start by putting the trans and shifter in neutral and line up the linkages and tweek it from there.

It would help if you align the shift levers and then slide a allen wrench thru the tube ( red arrow ) below the shifter levers, Push the allen wrench thru the tube and thru the levers That will help keep it in neutral.

Both excellent advice. I would add that you didn't state why you need adjustment or what you're trying to accomplish. Does it not shift right, sticking, hard to engage?

Put the shifter in neutral, loosen the nuts on the linkage lever, and put the levers on the transmission in neutral. Snug the nuts down. Tweak as required. I'd recommend adding a jam nut on top of the linkage/lever nuts. Mine had a bad habit of backing off.
