Ford 4R70W Holding Fixture

Post by ultraranger »

My '69 Ranger currently has its stock C-4, non-overdriven transmission, but I plan to swap in a Ford 4R70W 4-spd electronically-shifted overdrive that I pulled from a '98 3.8L SN95 Mustang. (the plan is to eventually replace the stock, carbed 240 inline 6 with a 5.0L fuel injected engine from a '90 Mustang GT).

I made a holding fixture, for the transmission, this weekend to make the tear-down/rebuild of the transmission a lot easier.

The raw materials; a 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" piece of boxed tubing --(an old hand rail), and a 7" long 2-3/8" O.D. piece of round tubing:

2. My 1:1 scale paper template:

3. The boxed tubing cut. Ready to be bead blasted and then welded together:

4. Holding fixture all fabbed up:

I guess it didn't turn out too bad considering I don't own a lathe, mill or any precision cutting equipment and also the fact that I've never had any formal instruction on how to weld either. :D

It turned out real good. And something I might be able to make too. Good job.
