Have a 1972 F-250, with 300 inline 6, 4 speed trans, 4:10 rearend, 245,000 miles. Bought this truck new in 72. Made big mistake at 172,000 miles by replacing orig engine w/ford factory rebuild! Really junk! To overcome engine issues was advised to do the following: Hooker headers, Crane cam HMV-260-2-NC, part #503901, Ofy intake manifold 6019DP, Holley 390 cfm 6140 carb, part # 0-8007. Am still using orig distributor but have installed electronic ignition and am using bosch platinum plugs. Tires are 285/35R16.

Have had this set up for nearly 15 years but notice front spark plug burns clean while rest get progressively worse toward the back. Rear plug is always worst with carbon build up. Exhaust pipe is totally black and upon starting, engine throws out conssiderable carbon. ( Am only asking now as just ran across this web site before Christmas, really impressive!)

Question: Is this really a good set up for this engine, trans, rearend? Main jets are .051 and I'm at 3500 feet elevation. If this carb, etc. is a good match, are these the proper jets? Am getting ready to do a compression check as have my doubts about engine but curious as to carb set up and jet size. Any thoughts/ideas would be appreciated.

I'm a little confused. Are you asking about a 4160 or 6140 carb? I"m assuming that 4160 is a typo?? I used the following jet calculator and came up with a 56 jet for the recommended size. http://www.bgsoflex.com/holley.html. I used 70 degrees, 3500 ft elevation and 25% and 50% humidity. Both came up with a 56 jet. To me it sounds like you may have the carb tuned a little too rich. I'n not sure why #1 would burn clean though, Before rejetting the carb, I'd try leaning it out and go from there.

Carburetor really is a Holley model 4160 390 cfm part #0-8007. Typo was within the text, good catch! Thanks for feedback.
