my bump got bumped today

Post by 71highboy »

so after taking my grandson sledding we were on are way to walmart and stopped in traffic and wham got hit in the rear my head hit the back window and thankfully my grandson is only 6 years old so his head only hit the back of the seat.the girl that hit my bump is only 16 years old and her bonneville got totaled but thankfully everyone in her car was ok.i am lucky that i have a 1/4 in tubular rear bumper the only thing body wise is the brackets got torn up.but when the police wanted me to dislodge my truck the transfer case was in the neutral position and now it pops out of gear so any suggestions on why that would happen after a rear end accident?

it happened because of the force from behind hitting a object that probably didnt want to move much. but it found its way to the weakest point it could in your truck. i would first look at the linkage and or case itself. as well as the trans to see if it was cracked or broken. if nothing is hurt on the outside it has to be inside of the tranfer case or the transmission.

Obviously something bent, broke, or shifted, just a matter of what.
Inspect the motor mounts, tranny mount, and definitely the t-case mounts. I'm sure your t-case bushings are totally wasted if you've never replaced them before.

when you say it jumps out of gear are you still talking about the t-case or the np435.
If you put it in 2hi does it stay in 2hi or does it jump to neutral?

If it is jumping to neutral then the linkage must be right on the border of neutral/2hi. which, if im thinking correctly (1 in the morning) would mean the t-case moved forward, but i'd think it would move back, because of inertia, like your head hitting the window.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I would look the transfer case mounts over and make sure that the transfer case wasn't shifted. If it's in the right place, then likely something is broke in the transfer case, but I would think that the transfer case likely shifted. Let us know what you find.

That sux. I don't know how long it takes for whiplash to go away, but I hope it's a speedy recovery for you.

First I'm glad everyone is okay. 2nd you ALWAYS feel worse 24-78 hours after the accident. Can't help on the popping out of gear problem but I hope it's a simple fix. Good luck dealing with the insurance companies.. major pain in the ass as far as I'm concerned.
