The T-18 is a good, strong tranny. It has a low 1st gear that will only be used for towing. In normal, every day driving you will start in 2nd gear. These things are pretty bulletproof in my experience. The T-18 is a very common transmission in ford trucks from the 1960's, 70's and 80's.

Here's a good link that will tell you more about it.

They are a tough truck transmission. I have one in a 79 F150 with 400,000 miles on it and the truck was purchased new by my father. Only a couple of minor issues over that time. Replaced a couple of reverse detent springs, a plastic shoe on a shifter fork, and the input shaft seal. I run Shell 80W90 gear oil in it and change it every 60,000 miles. Still working great. They do shift like a truck and not a sports car. Long throws and because of that shifting is slow. Don't expect to be able to demonstrate your truck's performance ability with a T-18.
