460 zf5 crossmember question in '69 3/4 ton

Post by carbine2 »

I did a search but came up empty. I have a 1969 3/4 ton 4x4 divorced with a 460 and 2wd zf5 installed. I am trying to sort out what cross member to use and figured I'd ask to avoid doing it wrong two or three times. I have the original crossmember for the tail of the NP435 and a low slung crossmember from a late 70s truck. Anyone have this engine/trans combo in their truck? What worked best?

Thanks

I'm in the same boat as you... You have the lead as I still am not sure on the Flywheel/starter/Balancing issues.. I have no idea as to what I'll need to hook these 2 units up..
Can ya tell me what flywheel/clutch/starter combo you went with?

I have a 1970 429 CJ and ZF5...

ANY HELP?

My experiences might help when I did the 4BT swap in my '68 HighBoy I used the M5odr2 and located the bell housing/engine joint as close to the factory position as i could~+/-1".while moving my house and shop from CA to AZ the 8,000# trailer load beat up the M5 and I am in the process of a ZF5 upgrade and the M5 and ZF mount with the same cross member/mount so here is what I did to the cross member,I moved it to the rear ~3.5" and lowered it ~2" and I also shortened the intermediate drive shaft ~6".Now all these numbers will only be approximate but it gives you an idea of where to start. Hope I helped at least a little if you want pics of what I have done let me know and I'll take what ever you need.

Good info. Mine is just sitting there mocking me for now. I've been more than a bit low on funds.

As for what starter and flywheel I used. I got a flywheel from a parts store for a later truck that would have used this trans stock. I found out before buying it that my engine is externally balanced so a ZF flywheel is a direct bolt on. I don't have the starter picked out yet.
