The right Toploader trans for FE 390?

Post by Motörhead1972 »

Correct me if I am wrong but can you use a 3 spd truck or 4 spd car toploader from a windsor and bolt it safely behind a 390 FE? Been around 302's and other windsors my whole life but never an FE. I already have the correct FE bellhousing. Wikipedia says they both use the same input shaft of (1 1⁄16) and 10 input splines. If not, what will I need to look out for?

This will be going in my 62' gasser project 8)

Thanks.

To use the car small block toploader behind a 390 FE engine you will need the 390 Truck bellhousing

The SB toploader has a longer input snout where it goes into the pilot bearing

If you use a car FE bell housing with the SB trans the input will bottom out and eat the thrust bearing out of the engine
