fuel pump upgrade

Post by 1guydude »

Well Im pretty sure my pump is bad or clogged. I will take the filter off and inspect but no gas comes from my hardline when I turn it over.
with and without my distributor + pwr hooked up.

Can I or is it worth it to get a more spendy unit? I see a cpl name brand ones that boast higher volume and some pressure... this is not a race truck so I don't want to flood it. Thinking a higher grade one may last longer? As I seem to have gone through a new one in less than a yr.
thanks

I used to spin the 429 in my mud truck up around 6000 rpms, with a stock Carquest fuel pump.
It lasted more than ten years , then I sold it.

Save your money.

A stocker should do fine. Just don't cheap out like I did and get the one year warranty unit. The ones that failed on me where the cheapest ones Autozone carried - for a reason, I guess. I'm using a more expensive lifetime warranty pump and I've had no problems (touch wood...)

You can pick up a Carter “muscle car” pump for less than 50.00... Hit up Summit Racing. CRT-M4008

Im thinking about ordering that carter pump.
My filter was bad and housing was full of rust.

I tryed to crank with the batt unhooked to the distributor. I got no gas in my mcdonalds cup.
Hooked the batt and battery up. Sprayed starter fluid in the carb and it fires but wont run.
I dont think.its safe to pour gas in the carb so im not.gonna do that

I wanna change the pump. Am i gonna get gas everywhere when i take the pump and or line off?!
Thanks

You will get a bit, but if you have a bolt or a clamp (made for the purpose) to plug the line from the tank and make an effort to keep it raised above the line from the tank you won’t lose a ton...

Before you change the pump you may want to send a little air back through your gas tank, right where the line bolts to it. Tends to get plugged there if your tank is rusty. I'd bet that lets fuel pump again.
Be sure to take your gas cap off first or you'll have a volcano in your cab.

well, I attempted to do the air spray back into the tank. I disconnected the line right where it goes up into the tank. On the metal hard piece. I was able to spray gas out on the ground from my filler so Idk where its clogged at. I didn't get any gas leakage or any gas coming out when I removed the rubber line. Gonna replace all the lines and blow whatever I can out and replace the pump hopefully today if the parts store has a decent one.
thanks all for ur replies.
