1968 F350 Camper Special Gas 3rd gas tank

Post by Jim Bathgate »

I bought a 1968 F350 Camper Special about 10 years ago with dualies, 360 engine, front disk brakes, and 12 foot bed. I've used it for hauling and from time to time have restored parts of it. Its got 29,000 original miles on it (original seats in great shape). Where I am currently stuck is the gas tanks. This vehicle evidently came with three gas tanks. The one behind the seat is the only one currently operating, although it needs a new sending unit. The tank under the floor near the front I am currently finishing up the reinstallation. But there was evidently a third tank near the back under the floor that no longer exists. The fuel line, wiring for the sender, and an inline fuel filter all exist, but the tank itself is gone. I can't seem to find anywhere the details of this tank, or where I can buy a replacement. Any ideas?

I dont think the rear of axle tank was available until 73, so somebody might have added that at some point along the line. If i am wrong I hope somebody corrects me.

Edit. welcome to :fr: , nice to see another bay area member.

Thanks for the quick reply. Although there does seem to be plenty of room for a third tank on this 159" wheelbase, I guess Ford put off making this available until later. Like you say, all the literature I can get hold of only mentions the two tanks. It does seem odd that although 100% of the truck seems original, the farmer down in Gilroy who owned it forever would have gone to so much trouble to add the third tank. If I get the two existing tanks operable, that gives me 45 gallons storage, so even at 8MPG, I still have a decent range of 360 miles.

I have three tanks as well. The main, behind the seat, the "normal" external tank under the bed on the driver's side, and an aftermarket tank under the bed on the passenger side. The filler for this is behind a small aluminum door with a key. If you want a new tank, you'll probably have to get really lucky at the junk yard, or have a custom tank built.

Do you have pictures? F350 bumps are kind of few and far between, so it's nice to hear of another.

Mine had 2 tanks - a 15 gallon on the driver's side, and a 35 gallon on the passenger side. It had a walk through cab so the tank behind the seats was removed and bucket seats added.
