Carb/intake combo suggestions for FE 360

Post by Pegtop »

Looking to replace my current carb which a previous owner put in. Edelbrock 750 4 barrel. The carb, surprisingly, runs great even though its likely too big for my setup. Main reason for the upgrade is cause I want to restore the kickdown and this current carb is not designed to accept one. Looking for suggestions for new carb and intake (might as well upgrade the intake while I'm at it and get a few more hp) which would work well with my stock 360. Any thoughts on CFM and type/brand/model of carb and intake? Thanks!

Sure.

Edelbrock Performer (PN 2105) and either a 600 or 650 cfm Holley 4160 or Edelbrock 1405/1406. Stick with vacuum secondaries.

However, ya won't realize the full benefit of a four-barrel carb n intake if ya don't first upgrade the exhaust with headers and dual 2.25- or 2.5-inch tubing.

What intake is on it now?

Any other known modifications?

Before you give up on the Edelbrock, I'm 99% sure that they make a kickdown adapter that bolts straight to the carb. I remember putting one on my 81 Bronco.

Awesome. I'll check those out. Yeah, the exhaust and headers are part of the plan but later next year sometime. I hear it can be difficult to find headers for 4wd models but I've still got some time before I go down that road. Thanks for the feedback!

Currently it's bone stock other than the carb and an updated electrical wiring harness and electric fan. Stock intake too.

Although I haven't contacted Edelbrock, I couldn't find anything on their site for the kickdown for a 1407-1354 Edelbrock carb with a Carter base. I suppose if I could find the right linkage, I would consider keeping it for the time being.

Truck FE’s never came with 4BBL carbs, is the current carb on an adapter or is it a car intake? Do we know if the engine is in fact the stock truck engine or could it be a car FE...

Investigation warranted based on responses...

To the best of my knowledge, it's the original truck FE 360 with the original intake. Carb is sitting on an adapter.

Then I agree Edelbrock Performer if no other mods are planned (Or a stock 4V manifold if you can find one.)

If you don’t plan modifications you might consider a Holley 2300 2V

Holley 2300 350 and 500 CFM

4bbl to 2bbl adapter. YUCK. 360's are not the rip snorters but all the parts you are about to buy can be flipped onto a 390 or whatever you build later if you do. The edelbrock performer is a fine choice as it save a TON of weight and will be your best bet. I like my holleys so i agree with above as a 600 CFM will do you fine basic 1850 holley as been with fords back to 1957 on the t bird 312. Also agree above open your exhaust up and then add some extra spark output ie coil wires increased plug gap, and that old 360 will wake up. :2cents:

To duckryders point i have a stock 4 bbl cast iron here but it cost you as much as a performer intake to get it to your house from where he and i are down here. That 2300 2bbl he just posted is a fine option to they are a fantastic carb.

I appreciate all the feedback. Edelbrock performer seems like the way to go. Still undecided about the carb but the suggestions will get me where I need to be. Bonus that if I ever upgrade my crank all these parts are still useable. Will keep you posted. Thank you!

Simple thing to remember. The Holley 4 barrel was designed for a ford engine the 57' Thunderbird. The carter edelbrock was designed for mopar engines. holleys may require more tuning to get dialed but once set and adjusted they run way better than any other carb. Edelbrock will run okay right out of the box but never runs great like a holley can when set right. I am die hard no other carb that autolites and holley. :D

+2 on the Holley 2300 2v. I installed the 350 cfm on mine and it runs perfect, plenty of power without being over carbureted.
