'68 needs exhaust, please help!

Post by jjdeal79 »

Hello everyone!
After much research and procrastinating, I am going to order exhaust parts. I have a '68 F-100 4X4, NP435, long bed. I will not be pulling the engine, so I am going with the Sanderson FF427 ceramics. I can't decide on a muffler. I'm looking at the Flowmaster 40, 44, or 50s. I want a 3-inch dual exhaust, stainless (?), to the rear of the bed. Gas tank is in the cab and truck is not lifted.

I realize that I'm probably going to have to go with a custom kit for the pipes. Are there any kits that are more plug and play? Dare I say a Chevy or other kit thatworks? I was looking at the Flowmaster universal kits for that too. Shipping is absurd to Alaska, so I want to make sure I'm headed down the right path.
As always, thanks for the help!

Sadly not many kits work well on the 4x4's with the t case in the way. Best bet is to stick universal and get all the bends and weld them up. Can you weld stainless or got a source. If not i would not go stainless without the ability to weld the system. As for mufflers 40-44's they will hear you and you will now it. 50's and 70's will give you rumble but not drive you wild. My thought's 8)

I forgot about the 70's.

The truck can have some sound, open up when punched, but can't be like glasspacks. The wife would never ride in it if it gets too loud, and that's not good. She likes to go to cruise night.

Oh, I can weld, will have to see if anyone in the club has a pipe bender.

If you still have the Original 360 in it or a transplanted mild 390

Do yourself a favor and run 2 1/2 inch exhaust

You will lose low end torque with 3 inch exhaust

GO with the 3" single pipe system (not duals) all the way back, with any of the Flowmaster 40/44/50 series. You'll be so happy you did.

The 3" all the way back is fine, and you'll save money compared to two mufflers, and two 2 1/2 inch pipes. Two 3" would be overkill as mentioned. It will have a mellow tone, NOT too loud, but will sound super.

The single will be easier for a local shop to route nicely too. You'll save about $175 over a dual system.

Let us know how it works!

I will eventually pull the original 360, rebuild, or put in a rebuilt 390. Mainly preparing for the future. Yes the 2.5 is the way I should go, as the rebuilt wont be crazy.

Probably overkill, but anyone run x-pipes? Heard them on mopars.

X pipes and h pipes are good for equalizing your pulses in the pipes and definitely gives a unique sound. With an x pipe best would be get them both on the passenger side around the t case then install the x over there before branching out for your dual rear exit. Heck x pipe is what gives some of the fox mustangs the epic note they have.

I'm another vote for the single. It took some real convincing, but I finally got my buddy to run a single 3" on his 1960 Galaxie 4dr. It has an all stock, from intake to pan '67 Tbird 390 4bbl with a blow through Demon and a TorqStorm single supercharger kit. He used a 3" Thrush drag muffler and it sounds amazing.

Well, finally ordered a flowmaster 2.5 inch dual kit, sanderson ff427 ceramics and series 70 mufflers. Now i have to wait for it to arrive. Not only is shipping to Alaska expensive, it take double the travel time.

Well...have not done much work, but I finally pulled off the old headers a month ago. Did a test fit and I will be ordering a mini starter. I know the one that is there very old.
I now know one of the causes for my exhaust leak on the rear, drivers side, of the block. I never noticed it before, but the top bolt hole is enlarged, halfway through, on the cylinder head. This explains why it was sealed, and got worse, I guess.

I will need to tap a bigger hole, or maybe weld in a grade 8 piece of all-thread?

Well RottenAppleRed has my vote too. Dual 3" might work for a 4306 Cat in a Kenworth but remember a 390 is only 180 cubes a side. Not a bunch of wind or noise for that matter. Also consider moisture build up in the mufflers if that cannot get enough heat to boil off. I have a 1957 International 300 Utility tractor with 169 cubic inches and fire crater pistons and a 1 1/2" exhaust and is plenty. Do the math, fit it right and you will be well pleased! Keep us informed. :D
