To hot tank or not

Post by Ron_Hall »

Hello all... My 390 block is stripped down to bare except for the cam bearings. Machine shop said the would hot tank it along with the crank and cam for $35 which I thought was a good price. well, my neighbor(who is a mechanic)said that if I do, all the plugs and bearings will have to be removed. Any thoughts on this? or a better way to clean it at home?

Thanks
Ron

Pull the freeze plugs and cam bearings out, they are cheap to replace.

No point in tearing it that far down without doing core plugs and cam bearings....

Make sure your shop knows how the rear cam plug goes in...

Hi guys... I think I should have given a little more info.
The motor has never been totally put together, crank, cam, pistons and timing chain were installed then it was put on hold which turned out to be 15 years. :( I restarted the project about 4 months ago and found that the pistons I installed were for a truck(short). I ordered new pistons then decided to pull the crank and cam to check everything. The block has assembly lube and and lite dust in it. I did have to scotch brite 3 cam bearings to get it to turn by hand. Not sure if I need to tank it or take it to the car wash.

Thanks again guys!!!

Did it get new bearing 15 years ago and freeze plugs and all? If you have been thru it once and it all was good stuff to begin with, then hot soapy water will suffice. Something like purple power or such. Jut beware purple power and super clean can turn dupli color engine enamel pink. Just pull all the oil galley plugs and scrub the bores good, The buy you a rifle brush set or engine brush set, and clean her up and fog it with wd40 right after. Main thing first what did it get 15 years ago?

Start fresh

Cam bearings and core plugs are less than 70 bucks

A clean block is priceless

Cleaner the better is all i can say. no time to cut corners. Don't know if it was bagged up how much dust and all is in the block. best bet is to blow it all the way apart remove everything you can and clean clean clean!!! :D if that means new oil galley plugs get after it. Those are mild compared to another overhaul. another thing is in my personal opinion the screw in galley plugs is far better. i would say if you know them out tap them for plugs and then wash it out.

Thanks Manny... I called the guy at the machine shop and he said bring it down and he would do the whole thing for $35.
I said that works for me and dropped it off. Worth for me.

I would also like to thank everyone that has posted.
