Help figure out what engine was installed in sons F100?

Post by rkhanso »

My son bought a 1971 F100 off Craigslist. The VIN says it should have a 302 in it. I'm pretty sure this isn't a 302.

Some other numbers that I can see on the engine:
Distributor tag: 48 D9SE 12127 AA 8J-08 (or maybe 3J-08)

On the dipstick, above the full mark:
DOAE-6750-C ford M

I don't see a tag on the carb. It's a 2-barrel.

Haven't found any on the engine yet. It's pretty dirty and we haven't cleaned it off enough yet.

Any ideas?

Here's a picture of the engine.

Looks like a Windsor (260/289/302/351) to me...

Give us a shot from above and the number off the intake ...

Yep 302/351 its a later model with the aluminum bracket power steering pump. Looks to be from like an early 80's. Again follow what DuckRyder is saying. Also look in front of the intake down to the timing cover is there support ribs. Another things is If you pull the starter motor off the engine above it cast into the block will be the true engine casting number. Curious to know if it's 302/351

Check the deck height at the distributor. If the boss where the distributor clamp mounts is about flush with where the intake mounts to the block it's a 302. If the intake mounting surface is about 1" above the distributor mount it's a 351.

The only numbers I could make out on the Intake Manifold:
D9DE-8125-0B

I'm not sure if those numbers are correct. The Ds maybe zeroes.
Not sure if I got all of the numbers.

The only numbers I found on the Intake were: D9DE-8125-OB (I think the first set are "D" but may be "zeroes"

I'll try to get the starter out and look for numbers on the block. There is a bad noise when it's turning over to start anyway.

Yeah, looks like a late 70's emission engine. They are at about the absolute bottom of the performance envelope. You can pop a valve cover off the verify that it uses the bolt down rockers vs. stud style like the earlier engines. What tranny?

What are the plans for the truck?

Looks wide (I don’t think there is room for the coil in that location on a 302 either) 351?

Follow Sargents instructions...

Maybe the Windsor experts will be along...

He wants to make it into a summer daily driver truck. I'm sure he wants to up the HP some. He'll likely buy a 4-barrel and new intake manifold. Though if we can't get the compression to come up (hopefully just sticky rings or something that can be cleaned out with some engine cleaners) - he may end up getting a different engine to rebuild over the winter and put it in next year. Hopefully at least get it road worthy and semi-reliable for this summer.

I'm not sure of the transmission. It is an automatic.

We've replaced the shocks. Are replacing the brake master cylinder and replacing brake fluid tonight. Going to take the starter out to see if it's the correct starter (it's got a funny noise when starting the engine).

Eventually he wants to redo the interior, make it sort of a street-rod truck.

Think so too lots of room around the intake manifold by the picture. I am gonna join the windsor crowd here. As for the transmission count the number of bolts that hold the pan on the transmission...

I counted 17 bolts on the transmission oil pan. I think that means it's a C6, right?
I haven't checked the code on the block - by the starter.
The engine oil sump is deep at the front of the engine.

He put a carb kit in it. It's running better, but not very smooth yet. Still working on seeing what we got and what else it needs.

Gotta get the brake lights and blinkers working before we drive it on the road.

It is very hard to read, but I think this is what is stamped on the engine:
D2AE-6015-BA3
3M17

Looking online, it appears it's a 1972 351W from a full-size Ford car (Galaxie or LTD?)
Anything else?

Is there a firing order stamped on the intake? 351W firing order is different from the older 302's. My original '70 firing order was 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 while the '85 351W going back in here is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. The firing order on the 302's changed around 1982 to the 351w firing order and the 302 HO has always been the same as the 351W.
