Ford straight 6 throttle rod

Post by rabbithunter2005 »

Does anyone have a pic of the stock throttle rod or cable setup for the 67 to 72 truck. I converted my highboy to a straight 6 and i have a universal cable on it now and I hate it. And actually trucks in western pa junkyards dont seem to have straight 6 engines in them so I gotta find one somehow. Any pics would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I have a 352, not a straight six. But I took out all of my stock throttle linkage crap and used a section of all-thread and a couple of heim joints to go straight from the carb to the pedal linkage. I could never understand why Ford used a trapezoid system to convert a pulling action at the pedal linkage to a pushing action at the carb. This also let me adjust the length of the all-thread to adjust the height of the pedal in the cab.

http://www.fordification.com/forum/down ... =23799&t=1 In that link from left to right is 240-300, FE, 302. That is the gas pedal set up anyway, then there was the trapeze mechanism that converted the pulling action to a pushing action on the carb via a rod. Inline 6 trucks are hard to find here also, so I converted my 390 truck to a 300. Infinately better in my opinion.

Hey man im with ya I took the 360 out and put this 300 in and I was surprised how well the 300 move this highboy around and im getting 12mpg with 456 gears so when I switch to 410 gears and to a 5 speed it should get 15mpg that's the goal of course ill probably mess all that up with the 4 barrel and cam down the road but I never can seem to leave anything stock Lol. Im thinking about asking the guy that I got the engine off of if he will sell me his gas pedal and the bracket on the fire wall that he had for the stock cable setup. I just feel bad asking him for this one last item cause I feel like im gutting his truck he gave me everything I needed to convert this so far.

Exactly right, The 300 is a low end grunt torque engine. Plus with the inline 6 design it has 7 mains, gear drive cam, one head, and will last for almost a million miles if treated right. And whilst you can get gear setups for v8s this is stock from the factory. Typically Bent 8s have a chain for the cam which can stretch and or wear out. I realise this is a minor issue but gears cannot stretch or wear out, if they did wear out the engine is toast anyway. Also being an inline 6 it is naturally balanced, and also has 40% fewer moving parts than a bent 8. Now in All this am I hating on V8 engines? The Answer is no, I quite like v8s in fords for racing. But for my PERSONAL use and daily driving the inline 6 300 is the best that it gets short of a Cummins 12 valve P pumped diesel. I am not a drag racer at my age (31) but I have sometimes thought what the heck at a stop light and dropped the hammer on some chev half tons with a 350 and beat them by a bunch of car lenghths. Also my engine would not only out race them from a light, but put 5000 lbs of bricks on a trailer behind my truck and a stock chev half ton efi from the 1990s and have us tow it up the Santiam pass, see who gets there first and who burnt more gasoline. FYI the 300 would win. Did just that in summer of 2016 for shits and giggles with a friend. And for the record I am not down chevy I just prefer ford and of ford my truck especially. It is my baby so to speak.

I watched your YouTube video man your 300 sounds sick I Wouldnt mind doing that to mine but the reality of it is Ive been driving mine with the 300 for almost a month now and this thing runs so good I dont wanna touch it. If I wanna run fast I take my 69 out for a ride its my nicer of my 2 trucks and I just cruise it now and here and there take it to the local raceway and run it. Now 10 years ago i would have said straight 6 engines are stupid cause I beat vehicles up so bad back then I went thru 2 300s in 2 months. But I was 19 years old then. Now im going on 30 here soon and while im not old by any means I am a bit wiser and having something that gets better mileage eases up the pain at the pump. No more big blocks for me until I hit the lottery and buy a race car Lol.

You'll love the 4.9L 300-Six and so will everybody else. Throw on an Offy-C intake and the fuel injected type exhaust manifolds and you'll get a responsive big six. Gas mileage, around 14-15 mpg.
Work on getting a good throttle linkage for your gas pedal. Don't necessarily need the stock one IMO. 8)

Right now getting 12mpg the 360 I had b4 was getting 8 so much happier there and ill be picking up a 5 speed this weekend to do that swap and im gonna take the 456 gears out of the rear and put 410 gears in to match the HP Dana 44 I put in up front. So hopefully im gonna get to around 15 mph very soon then ill consider doing the 4 barrel. So the stock throttle linkage probably wont work for that so here I am looking for something that I probably wont be able to use eventually Lol oh well I still wanna find it.
