when i have done it. the piston is at tdc. i then put the crank at zero. then you have to put the dist in slightly off so that when the bottom gear engauges the cam gear it will turn the rotor slightly and be lined up after it goes in completely.

If you havent taken it out yet Id mark the dist housing to the intake manifold and then id mark the rotor point to the dist housing. remove and replace with all four marks lined up. If its already out of the engine Id set No.1 to Top Dead Center (TDC) so that the balancer pointer is pointed at 0 degrees. With both valves closed then drop your distributor in pointing to the No. one terminal on your dist cap. Then I usually just give it a inch or inch and a half of movement of advance then once its running set with a timing light or vacuum gauge. Sorry I dont have any pictures to show.
