My 460 Build

Post by BobbyFord »

I decided to use my other heads for my build. These are C9VE heads (same as D0VE). I've had these on the shelf for a few years, I had them done for another engine but never used them. Just got some new springs and rocker arms.

Intake and exhaust ports were max-ported.

2.08"/1.66" valves were removed and heads were machined to accept 2.19" stainless steel intake and 1.76" exhaust valves:

These are the Comp Hi-Tech stainless steel roller rockers (ain't they purty). I got these because I'm paranoid about component failure (these have a lifetime warranty against rocker arm breakage). I've seen aluminum rocker arms break before.

The short block is assembled, I just have to put the heads on and figure out the rocker arm geometry (pushrod length). I also have to overhaul the trans that's on my garage floor next week.
It has been a lot of fun (and money :() gathering all of the bits and pieces and I can't wait to hear this thing run. I still have to get a carb and a bunch of little misc. stuff. :D

How did you keep the heads so nice during that time?

I am almost at the same point. As soon as the block comes back from the machine shop it is time to check rocker geometry also.

The heads were oiled, wrapped plastic and boxed in a dry garage.
Just follow the extended post on 460ford.com about the rocker arm geometry: http://www.460ford.com/forum/showthread.php?t=141907

And I've seen stainless break- http://www.ffcobra.com/forums/showthread.php?t=187922
stainless or not there "cast". Aluminum's are forged and also are lighter.

Not too sure what problems that guy had with his valvetrain setup but I will not have the same problems with mine. I've seen WAY more broken aluminum rockers than I have seen broken steel rockers.
Forged aluminum is good but what they're forged out of is more important.

just pointing out they can still break. And sure you may see more broken aluminum there's probably 1 set of stainless to 100 sets of aluminum. The only cast stainless out there are the Comp's. :2cents:

What year block and what pistons are you using? I sure would like a set of heads like that but can't afford to do any engine work on mine. I had a nice set of stock Dove's once and had to sell them for bills.
The 460 in my 71 F100 is pretty stock low compression engine with just a small cam, headers and 4v carb but it'll move my long bed pretty good. Can't imagine what your engine is going to be like in a short bed but should be LOTS of fun
