Post by eggman918 »

To start with I am a machinist/maintenance mechanic of many moons and have installed every type of seal imaginable...how ever in the last 5 or 6 FE builds the damn seal leaks. Everyone needs to be humbled now and then. What is the trick?

i've never done it. but isn't it a rope seal? in 2 pieces? if so i think you have to off set the seams on the seal with the bearign cap so the gaps don't line up.

Since the replacements are a split rubber seal, Fordman is partially right.

Remove the old seal and clean the seal bore in the block and in the main bearing cap.

Install the top half of the seal by pushing it into the seal bore/groove. You may have to rotate the crankshaft while doing this.

Place the bottom half in place ON THE CRANKSHAFT, not in the bearing cap.

Rotate the entire seal 15-20 degrees or so, so that the ends do not align with the bearing cap mating surface.

Install the bearing cap and torque to specs.

I've installed hundreds of these seals in all brands of engines, and following this procedure, I've never had one to leak!!

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

That's not an oil leak :nono: That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!

And throw the side seals and nails away, clean all parts meticulously and use "The Right Stuff" for the side seals.

Since nobody said it yet, it's best to pull the engine to do this properly. If pressed for time (or doing this under warranty :D) it is easier and more effective to yank the motor. This will also allow you to easily fix any other leaks such as, intake, timing cover, etc. When I pulled my 360 for a rear main leak, I replaced the following: rear main seal, oil pump, timing chain, gears and gaskets, intake gasket, valve cover gaskets, valve seals and water pump. I now have piece of mind, better oil pressure and no oil leaks. (Incidentally, that was less than 100 miles ago on this 60,000 mile motor that I will be selling because of the 500 hp, 466" transplant taking place next month).
