I've seen them and worked on them in trucks with Detroit Diesel and Cummins.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

Re: Air starters
Yeah,
If you have a FE or 460 or whatever, and you are having problems starting, there is a problem you need to find. My 429 would take several slow hard cranks to fire, i replaced the battery cables with much bigger cable, And i installed a heat shield on the starter. But it was still having a hard time and couldn't figure it out until my dad noticed the cranking power of the battery i had was for a Civic... cranks perfect now with a real battery.

Re: Air starters
Baisically, to answer why, i just think theyre cool, and i was just currious if anyones ever seen one in a bump, but if anyone knows of one that will fit a 240 straight six, let me know, i just love the way they sound on startup, pluss they have more torque and spin at a higher rpm than our electric starters, all that means, quicker starts

Re: Air starters
Just get a high tourque electric starter.
I got to go with 70 on this one, the supporting components needed for one would take up too much space. A compressor for air bags will not support the CFM needed for the starter.

Re: Air starters
The only time that ive seen a airstarter used on a gas motor is at a dragstrip. And those hooked to the supercharger for starting and were removed after the car is running. But thats been years ago.

Re: Air starters
Airstarters belong on large displacement diesel engines or diesels in very cold climates. They simply aren't needed for a gasser.

Re: Air starters
I'll agree on one thing about them. They WILL scare the4 crap out of you. They do sound cool when used but really can't see ever getting one to work on a bump without gobs of money.
I also had a little trouble getting my 460 to start when I first swapped it in. My cables were the trouble. They looked fine but were corroded up pretty back under the sheath. I went with the large clear sheathed cables so I can see any corrosion this time.

Re: Air starters
i've never even seen a truck at all except in the movies that ever had one on it. i also like the road warrier . when he goes back to get that semi out of fuel and abonded on the highway. it seemed to have plenty of air and a battery too. for being a abondonded truck.

Re: Air starters
There isn't any reason to put one on a bump since an electric starter has no trouble turning one over, regardless of engine, and bumpsides don't often have large storage tanks of onboard air. Therefore, I highly doubt it.Heathcliff68f100 wrote:Thanks for the link man, i remember seeing that movie when i was little, i loved it, and i dont think i made myself clear, i didnt say i wanted an airstarter on my truck, i just like them, and was wondering if anyone HAS seen one on a bump
