302 in a f250 crewcab or not

Post by M-100 »

Well i have been looking for a crewcab for a long time and finally found one. its not perfect but not to bad . The worst thing is there is a chevy 350 where a ford motor should be. I have a very good 302 but not sure how it would do in a crewcab. I was thinking about using a truck 4 speed also . What do you think

Been driving a crew for over 20 years first with a 360 2v then a 390 4v and now a Cummins 4bt, the 360 was barely adequate.
The 390 was built to '69 GT specs and I liked it except feeding it 8-10 was my average but it would do what ever I asked it to do.
The 4BT will out work the 390 in every way and eats less that half what the 390 did doing the same job
To me 400 ft/lbs torque is the minimum needed for this application :2cents:

The 302 would be veeeerrrrrry anemic. I'd sell the 302 and go bigger. 390 would be a minimum.
too many Fords, no where near 'nuff time.

or, money.

I would think the 390, or 460 would be a better starting point. Chevy motor in a Ford :cuss:

NOT..... A 302 in a crew is a very, very bad idea... not enough torque.... it'll won't be able to get out of its own way.... you'll be a rolling chicane on the highway.

I guess it all depends on what you want to do with it. Haul, daily driver or car shows? I have a 1969 F350 dump with a 78 302 4 speed 2 bbl carb and manual steering with 4.10 gears.I used this truck for 10 yrs same clutch. Number 4 cylinder has oil leak and would foul plug once in a while. Top speed about 55. I hauled heavy loads with it no problems.I parked it an now have an 88 f350 w/efi 460 5 speed. It goes faster and makes longer trips.Just my :2cents:

Bigger is better. It is pretty much a given that if you are driving a bumpside crew cab gas mileage is not a priority.

My 68 F350 crew has a 360 with C6 auto and 4.10 rear end. Not going anywhere fast or quick.

A diesel will be hard to beat for the ease of torque it will produce. Big gasoline engines also produce a good amount of torque.

However, you don't have the diesel or a big V-8 but you do already have the 302. In stock form, the 302 isn't going to be a power or torque monster but (and maybe easier and cheaper than you think) the 302 is quite capable of making 400 hp (with room for an additional 100hp) and 400 ft/lbs torque, if around 400 ft/lbs. is the threshold requirement needed of an engine to easily propel the CC.

At what cost is the 400FtLB of torque for the 302

With the 4BT it was a $700.00 turbo and turning a couple of screws and that got me 400+ @ 1750 RPM I LOVE my 4BT :woohoo:
