help with swapping engine tranny 1967 F250
I have a 1967 Ford F250 that was made into an ice cream truck and has been in service more or less for 50 years. I rebuilt the original 6 cylinder CID 300 with starter, wires, carb, etc. The transmission is a automatic 3 speed c6 that was also rebuilt and works fairly well, although not great. I have found that there was a crack in the block that was repaired poorly and have added leak suppressant to keep the antifreeze leaks down. Was thinking of replacing both engine and transmission and wanted some help in selecting a source and perhaps a more modern engine/tranny. Any suggestions? Vin starts with F25AEE

If you are swapping out both the engine and tranny, you can replace them with whatever you want. If you replace the engine only, you have to stay in the Windsor engine family (300-6, 289, 302, 351) to be sure that it mates up to your bell housing.
How modern do you want to go? My Ranger has a carbed 302 w/ an AOD tranny that replaced a 4 banger/ 5 speed combo and my 69 bump has a 429/C-6 that replaced a 240 inline 6 with a C-4.
When you swap out the engine/tranny as a unit, it's all up to you where to go from there.

Thanks TS, been wondering what would hold me back. I need torque thought because the truck approaches 8000 GVW when loaded, any suggestions?

I don't have any engine suggestions, but I do think you need to post pics of this truck. It sounds pretty interesting.

If you are happy with the torque you are getting from the 300-6. Then i would put in another one. I would upgrade your trans to something newer with O.D. If i remember correctly those chassis were geared pretty low. So an O.D. trans would help you out at speeds above 50 mph.
If you decide to go with an O.D. trans, get an extra cooler for it and mount it in front of your radiator. Most O.D. transmissions do not like heat. With a load cap. of 8K, extra cooling would be in order.
Engine wise, if you don't like the 300-6, i would go with a 351 W. I am not fond of the 302 motor in a truck. I don't care for the torque/h.p. ratio the 302 delivers. I know i will catch flak for it, just my opinion.
I would not go with a 460, realistically that would be way over powered for your application, and 460 engine are NOT known for mileage of any kind. FE blocks are the same way, lots of torque, heavy fuel consumption.
Good luck with your project. Great to see such a unique truck still at work.

Thanks two bit. Anybody know an engine supplier that isn't on the most wanted list?
