I'd say pulling it is the best approach. I recommend removing the trans from the bell housing then the bell housing from the engine. Should be pretty straightforward, watch your clutch linkage.

Ditto. I'd pull it and at the very least bore the thing and put new pistons in it after getting the rods reconditioned with new bolts. Inspect the crank and leave it alone if it's OK. You are out bearings, pistons and ARP rod bolts. Disassemble the heads and do a back yard valve job with a drill press and file / snadpaper to get it through a year or two while you save up / search for some good replacements for cheap.

It took me three years to get me 5.0 in my Mustang done. Broken ring lands demanded new pistons a couple month into me owning it. Next year was an Autozone recon crank and new bottom end bearings. Next year was a set of used AFR 185's and Total Seal gapless rings.
