help: which Holley carb to fit edelbrock performer 390?

Post by HVAC9 »

I have stock 69 f250 with an unmodified 2bbl 390. I'm going to put in an edelbrock performer 390 intake manifold. I want to pair it with a 4 bbl Holley carb preferably with manual choke as I like using the trucks original manual choke. Any recommendations on model of Holley carb? Theirs too many options. I've heard some guys have had trouble getting everything to swap but that they work like a dream when it fired up. This truck is stock other that a pertronix ignition. Auto trans, pwr brakes...

For an automatic I would advise a vacuum secondary. 570-600 CFM should be plenty.

The old standby 600cfm 0-1850C should work well. (this may not have a Ford kick down, you'll want to call and check)

https://www.holley.com/products/fuel_sy ... ts/0-1850C

In a dual line there is always the 0-3310C although a 750 is too big really.

https://www.holley.com/products/fuel_sy ... ts/0-3310C

Or the Street Avenger 570 0-81570 or 0-85570 (alum) which is in my opinion the best choice.

https://www.holley.com/products/fuel_sy ... ts/0-81570

Most of these are available in different finishes. (so for instance an 1850C is Chromate finish, 1850S is silver and 1850SA is silver aluminum)

You will probably need the kick down extension kit and throttle ball kit. (and a secondary spring kit might help too)

Summit's house-branded Holley 3310 clone is worth consideration.

Consider the following numbers from Jay Browns the great Intake comparo book(well worth the money) He ran head to head the same engines so nothing varied but on a 428/410 HP engine a Perfomer intake made 375 HP @5200 rpm and the same engine on the Factory Ford T-intake made 365 HP. I think anyone spending a ton of money here is going to be let down thinking its going to make a bunch more power. Now with that being said your coming from the 2V would make a lot more power. As Duck made some really great choices those would be perfect. I am a 1850 type for a 390. The volume made makes them a great used bargain. And if they do not have the kickdown I run a choke cable for it and do it manually when towing or getting frisky.

yes, I have 1.12. You just have to figure out what jet size to use. Great carb. I read it was killed cause it would not pass emissions :D

my carb number is C5AFE that came with 50F/60F jets. went to 54F/60F on rebuild. was planning on checking A/F to possibly improve tune but runs fine right now and plugs look good.

BTW, I went with aluminum manifold for the weight savings. Motor is setup for low rpm torque. Sometimes ill drive truck as a daily driver to work for weeks at a time... get decent gas mileage for what it is. For speed, I take out the Terminator Cobra

One big plus for me of the 4100 over the Holleys is the single piece fuel bowl. Had Holleys on other cars and the fuel would also leak out and the gasket would dry up...especially if you didn't drive the vehicle for a while.

Just curious, but anything wrong with the Edelbrock 600cfm here? I know Holley has the name but since autolite was mentioned, whats wrong with the Edelbrock if anything?

I've heard that the Edelbrock 600 CFM Carb is a bit easier to tune than the Holley, and I have a couple that I picked up from buying parts here and there, but I have yet to use it in a running application. I've also heard that the Edelbrock isn't as tempramental as the Holley if you get timimng issues and potential backfiring through the carb, which I've been told messes up the internals of the Holley sometimes. Supposedly the Edelbrock is built so this does not occur.

Since I've yet to get to that point, can anyone confirm this?

New Holley carbs have a anti backfire valve which no longer blows the power valve

If you ask a Holley guy which carb to run what do you think he will say

If you ask an edelbrock guy which one do you think he will say

The big question is which one do you know how to work on

I have well over 20 Holley carbs from 390 to 1150 CFM

I like them. My truck sits for 2 months at a time in the winter

Pump it twice and it fires right up

The 600 holley 1850 carb will do you just fine
