best sounding exhaust for a 300 i6

Post by rustyboltz »

hey all, I am currently building my 72 f100 and have a 300 i6 with headman headers, offy dual plane intake and a holley 390 cfm carb and the 240 head, almost time to have the exhaust installed. Looking for ideas or advice on what would be the best sounding exhaust. don't want anything to loud just want a nice mellow tone and want the pipes to exit behind the rear wheels, any advice would be appreciated thanks

Sound quality is too subjective.

I personally like Flowmaster muffler sound, a crossover pipe between the two "banks" and larger diameter mandrel bent pipe, not crush bent.

My dad likes true duals and turbo mufflers with regular crush bent pipe.

I don't like any of the six "buzz" sound.

Right now, I have EFI manifolds, a MagnaFlow mandrel bent Y-pipe, 2.5 mandrel bent pipe to a 2.5 Thrush glasspack, 2.5 to a 3" Dynomax SuperTurbo, and a 3" mandrel tailpipe. It was too loud for me without the glasspack and I liked it better with the Flowmaster, but it's good enough for now.

thanks for the input, I should have worded my original post differently, what I was asking for is information on what size pipe and muffler might help to eliminate the six cylinder buzz. would an x pipe or h pipe help? I have not heard the motor, setup like this running yet, I am real close to starting it up, open headders or course, but just asking for anybody's knowledge and experiences as to what they did when running the exhaust. I realize that it is not ever going to sound like a v8 but I don't want it sounding like a Honda either. thanks

Small diameter and crush bent will make it buzz (or "rap" as some say) more. An X or H pipe will help some, and my Flowmaster had less of that six buzz than my Dynomax.

My 67 has an Offy DP and an Autolite 4100, EFI exhaust manifolds, 2.5" Walker Y pipe, 2.5" Smitty 24" long glasspack and it exits behind the tire. It sounds like a Cummins. No real buzz sound, but drones some while driving.

My son's truck is a 72 with a mild cam, Offy DP and Holley 390, EFI manifolds, custom Y pipe and 3" exhaust. It had a Flowmaster 40 that exited behind the rear tire. IT WAS VERY LOUD!!!!! So loud, you could hear me for blocks. It would buzz like crazy. I had the muffler changed out to a stock type, 3" muffler. It is much quieter, but isn't quiet. It still has a buzz to it.

Of the three, I prefer the glasspack.

after y pipe split the exhaust with a y and run dual 2.25 pipes with these mufflers. http://www.ebay.com/itm/331365476420?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT I run pipes out back or behind tires with .25 bigger than pipe chrome tips. These mufflers are quite but make a very deep tone that people for the most of the time cant tell its a I6. Sounds very nice on last 2 builds.
