1983 F100 Parts Truck, What Can I Use?

Post by PSB »

Hey everyone,

I've been working on getting my 67 F100 road-worthy in the few weeks I've owned it. It ran and drive when I got it, but it was rough. It has the original 240 and 3spd column shift, so I did a basic tune-up, buttoned up the shift linkage, and replaced the points with a Pertronix electronic ignition and a new Pertronix coil.

While looking for parts locally, I got a lead on an 83 F100 parts truck with a 300 I6. Being that I want to stick with a straight six, I'm after the motor and tranny. I'm going to have the 300 freshened up at a machine shop so I have it ready to drop in after a CV IFS swap, probably this fall or winter. I scored an Offy intake and hedman header for a 240/300, so the plan is to have the fresh 300 ready and waiting.

Anything I should know about early 80s 300s that might differ from 60s and 70s motors?

What else can I use from the donor truck? Any other parts worth taking off before the donor truck heads to the scrap yard?

I searched on interchangeability, but most of the information relates to 67-72 and 73-79 parts.

An '83 F-100 should have a 9-inch rear end with a 5-on-4.5" lug pattern. This would be an exact match for the Crown Vic front lug pattern.

depending on the transmission your driveshaft length might change and your crossmember might need moved, but of course you'll have to figure all that out with the CV swap

the axle will be wider on the 83... i think... 2" wider and of course spring perches and all that will have to move.

the motor mounts will be DIY as they never put that 6 in the CV front end, duh

hmm... 83 will have crazy EGR shiz and probably that godawful feed back carb. just ditch it all and replace with EFI manifolds and an offenhauser intake.

for the most part, aside from the emissions stuff, that engine should be almost identical... little stuff like sensors, distributor, etc, but shouldn't be anything else major. you'll probably want to use DS2 ignition anyhow. I think 83 is TFI ignition, which i don't know anything about and appears to be full of magic and nonsense

here this guy used a 300 on a crown vic swap

the rear axle from the 83 is agreat for a crown vic swap because its wider and will help with the front to back track width
