1967 F100 Shortbed - Yay or Nay?

Well, this is my first post. Hopefully I've done everything correctly and the photos show up. My roommate picked up this 67' F100 as a trade. He had a 69 Chevy Pickup. We're not too sure about this one and are wondering if It might be better for parts or someone with the money and time to properly restore. What do you guys think? I'm going to try and price out all of the parts needed and see how much would need to be invested, but it looks like a lot. I've never really worked on a pickup. I had a Chevelle that I tinkered with in high school, but never really went too far with it. This looks like it would definitely take plenty of hours to fix up.

Cab mounts are non-existent, cab corners are rusted, cross member under cab is rusted. Floor pans were layed in over the rusted out pans.

2016 F-150 Eco-Boost 2.7 liter. (It will smoke the tires!)

Well, it is a short bed and looks to be a Ranger, so its probably well worth the trouble.

But it is going to be a very big project. How are your welding skills...

As stated above, short box Rangers are probably worth fixing, but your cab is probably the worst I've seen in a long time. Most body shops wouldn't touch that cab, unless the owner is willing to pay big bucks, usually due to sentimental value of the truck.

I'm certain there is enough cabs in your part of the country that have minimal rust. I find the quicker you need a part, the more you end up paying...ie: if you're in a rush, a wrecker will charge you a lot. If you wait and watch enough ads over months, and put feelers out, you will probably come across one that someone wants to get rid of for cheap.

You'll need some new or good inner fenders, and you may as well look into the galvanized rad support swap from a 73-77 F100 tech article on this site. Your doors and fenders look to be in okay shape...these trucks are great for learning to do patch panels, as panels are available and you don't have a lot to lose but your time. The biggest piece might be the box...in Canada, not a lot of short beds were sold, so we have to go to Montana or AZ to find a good one, and most guys just come back with a whole truck at that point.

If the bed is in good shape, Find a rust free 3/4 ton donor truck and do a body swap.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I know my buddy is having some regrets, but I think he is okay with a long restoration process. In case he does decide to sell it at some point, what do you think it would be worth? I think it has a 351 in it, with the 400 crank and pistons. I know that's not original, but wasn't sure if that would help or hurt the value. Also, I was kind of curious if the frame was original. Is the number visible with cab and bed on, or do they need to be removed to see?

Give us a few good pictures of the engine.

My personal opinion is that if it is a 400m or 351m that would hurt the value. But if it was done right maybe not much or not at all.

What state are you in? I am in Maryland and would be interested in the truck if he isn't committed to a long resto.

I'd find a good parts truck and replace the cab.

He is in Jacksonville Florida. There are a decent amount of NOS parts, but none are really body related. Aside from the fender hangars.

I don't think he'll let it go too cheap, because he said he'd rather keep it than lose the value he had in it. Let me know what you think though. On a personal note, I'm hoping he would sell it.. haha. He doesn't have a good place to work on it right now.

Ironically by keeping it, he will end up losing the "value he has in it" because he'll spend so much on fixing it...or like 95% of guys with project vehicle dreams, will just put some money and time into it and then give up at some point, making for 100% loss of that additional investment and probably having to sell it for cheaper than he paid originally because it's just another unfinished project truck at that point.

Really he needs to decide where his passions are at in the car hobby, if he loves 67 shortbox Rangers (I do, I have one!) then it just might be worth it in the long run because of his passion for it.

If it's just another project.....well....how many guys ever really finish the project vehicles they start? being honest with yourself can save a LOT of time and money on most old cars!

maybe go the "rat rod" style instead, that way you just put some fun and cool effort into rat rod style but not a lot of cash, and still be cool at car shows and cruise nights, it's a great way to go on a budget for sure!

Buddy sold the truck. He has a 68 and a 70 now. I think he is going to sell the 70 to fix up the 68. I'll post pictures.
