Heirloom wrote:I agree on the slotted mags. They just look right, which is why I am keeping mine despite the 16.5 size and minimal tire selection. Don't know if you put new coils in or not, but that might help the front a little. If they are new already, a spacer would bring that front up a bit.

EDIT: In searching I came across these. I might try them on mine since I plan to install a compressor, tank and rear helpers anyhow.

I thought about replacing the coils, but mine are in great shape. The reality is that the turning radius on this truck is terrible to start with. With 33s on the front, it would have been even worse. So I am better off with the 9.50s on the front anyway. Already bought the tires so just going to keep it as is now. But yeah, limited tire sizes with the 16.5 wheels, but the ones available work for how mine sits.

You'd need a parking lot to make a three-point-turn. :D

The neighborhood elementary school down the street was having a PTA fundraiser tonight with food trucks, a car show, and an outdoor movie under the stars. I took today off and spent all day detailing both the Fairlane and the Crew. I had shown the Fairlane a couple of months ago, so it had been previously detailed this summer. Only had to spend an hour and a half on it. The Crew on the other hand, had not been washed since the day it came back from the paint shop. So 4 months of dirt, dust, hand prints, grease, etc... I spent over 7 hours detailing the truck today in order to get it show ready. But it looks soooooo good!

Here is the truck after its bath. The wheels alone took 2 hours with steel wool just to get them presentable. I still need to get them professionally polished at some point...
Image

For most shows, I am going to have to choose which vehicle to show. But this worked out because since the school is literally down at the end of my street, I was able to drive one there, walk home, and then drive the other one there. :D And here are a few shots of my babies, side by side...

The Fairlane got it's fair share of compliments, but the Crew Cab got a TON of attention!! People really liked it and I can't tell you how many times people told me they have never seen an old crew cab before..

Here are a few of the other cool Fords that showed up at the show. There was a cool 63 Galaxie and a 66 Mustang (seen behind my Fairlane), but for some reason, the pictures of those are not on my phone anymore... :dk:

Cool lowered 67 Econoline pickup:

Ford GT parked next to a Lambo... I would take the GT:

Then there were a ton of Vettes (a whole club) and a bunch of other Chevys, but they are a dime a dozen at every show. So of course, I just took pictures of the blue ovals.

Would look cool if you could trailer your Fairlane behind the Crew to a car show . By the way, your crew is making me wish my 69 was complete. I still have a ways to go

Spent today chasing some leaks and fixing a few problems here and there that have surfaced recently. Fixed a leak in the vent tube of my auxiliary gas tank, fixed a leak that appeared in my transmission, tightened my heater hoses which started leaking, fixed one leak that appeared on my power steering box. I have a second leak that I cannot seem to fix on my power steering box which means I am eventually going to have to pull it and get it rebuilt. I also have had a slow leak in several spots from under my intake manifold which has been pretty annoying. It is not leaking under pressure, but once the motor start cooling, the coolant is leaking from the front rubber gasket and in a couple spots on the passenger side. I put some stop leak stuff for the coolant system in the radiator today and took a 20 minute drive to get it all circulated. I have not seen a leak since, so we will see over time if that took care of it. I do not want to take the top of the motor back apart to replace the gasket.

I also noticed that my power steering pump had a significant rattle and vibration when the motor was running. Found that one of my mounting bolts was loose and then found that the hole in the block was stripped out. So ended up drilling it out and putting a Heli coil in, and now it is nice and secure. No more crazy rattle and shake.

I also did an oil change today and got rid of the break in oil with the bits of metal in it from the cam and motor break in. New oil in and the motor is still happy. I also upgraded my headlights to the H4 bulbs that I was pointed to on eBay. They are significantly brighter and a lot whiter. The old bulbs are very yellow when you compare the two. I took some pictures after changing out the drivers side bulb. They were taken during the daylight, so they dont show as well as they would at night, but you can kinda tell that the H4 bulb is brighter and definitely more white.
Image
Image

I also have noticed my battery draining and have had a dead battery a couple of times now. I have been keeping the battery on a tender over night but looked into the problem today. It appears that the 3G alternator I pulled from the junkyard is not doing its job. I only have about 12.4 volts at the battery when the motor is running. I should be at 13.5. to 14.5, So tomorrow I will be going to the junkyard and pulling a couple more 3G alternators. I am sure I will get a good one. :)

The other thing I wanted to tackle today was getting my horn fixed. It is not working and it may be as simple as adding the jumper over the rag joint. I will give that a shot tomorrow and see if that fixes the problem. Otherwise, the truck is running great and almost "done" (they are never done). Only things left on my list is to get the AC line evacuated and charged, the horn, the alt, get the scratches fixed at the body shop, and get the windows tinted. I am dropping the truck off at the body shop on Monday and I should have it back before Friday, and the alt and horn will be taken care of tomorrow hopefully.

Thanks to everyone for taking a peek at this thread from time to time and all the comments along the way. These trucks are never done so I will always update this thread as new things pop up...

Today I went to the pick-a-part and pulled two 3G alternators. One is a remanufactured one from a 95 Taurus V6 that had been rolled (so it was running) and another from a 96 Taurus V6 that only had 117k miles on it. Got them for $18 each. Took them both to the auto parts store and had them bench tested. Both put out 14.5 volts and 130 amps. The 3G I had on the crew was only putting out 10 volts. So that was the cause of my charging problems. Put one of the good 3G's in today and all is good. The other one will go in the Fairlane. Pretty happy that both alternaters were good as that made it a good score.

I didn't get to the horn again, but no biggie... Eventually I will look into that. The bummer today was that there was a nice pool of coolant in front of my intake manifold again. So the stop leak didn't work. Tearing the top of the motor apart again is in the near future. Oh well...

I spent some time going through at this whole thread today. I was thinking that we should have a so cal meet up. Your many mechanical and other abilities during this project make me feel ashamed to even show the progress of my own bump. Budget prevents some of us from accomplishing some of the things you have.

Your persistence, patience and knowledge have been rewarded. It is nice to read how the local members have supported you with their valuable time and wisdom. We glean many ideas for our own projects by reading the threads in this forum. As an example, the rear valance made from the tailgate is incredible. In the future I would like to fashion some sort of custom fitting bumper for mine, so that valance gives me food for thought.

Also it is helpful to know our limitations in what we should do, or let others do. Your exhaust system is first rate. I always wanted to make my own exhaust at some point and doing so on my bump has been aggravating and rewarding. I am almost happy with my home made exhaust, but spending over 75 hours of work on it, giving up on it, starting again, making mistakes, remaking bends, cuts, welds, etc. I should have left that to the experts. But it is done and I am glad I stuck with it.

I just got my truck running again this past weekend on the 28th. (no exhaust leaks). Hopefully I can start driving it in the next couple of weeks, after sorting out the little things.

Thanks for all the encouraging pics and viddies.

Thanks for the kind words! While I know there are different budgets across the board with some being high and some being low, I ended up spending over 3 years getting this truck done due to not being able to afford it all at once.. I originally did not plan on a restoration of this magnitude, but it just kept snowballing as I went and I kept doing more and more. If I could have afforded it, I would have had it done in under a year, but there was just no way I could swing that. I have kept a running total and including the cost of the truck itself, I am still under $14k invested. Most of the other cars I have done, I spend more than I will ever see out of that vehicle. But in this case, I am fairly confident that if I decided to sell the truck tomorrow (AINT HAPPENING!!!), I could get more than that out of it in its current condition. I got lucky though with a lot of the deals I struck for work on this truck (paint, exhaust, upholstery), and then doing the rest of the work myself and with friends really saved money as well. The reality is I could easily have been over $20k invested if I had not done the truck the way I did.

The persistence was there, the patience was not always there, and the reality is that I have everyone on this site to thank for the knowledge that I have obtained. When I bought my first bumpside, I knew nothing about these trucks. Everything I have learned about them is from this community and just doing the work on the trucks. There is still plenty I do not know and more I learn every day just reading posts on this site and talking to other members. I really do love this place... It is my little internet coffee shop.

The pride of doing something yourself just cannot be matched by buying the same thing. While my exhaust came out great, yours is even better because YOU did it. I wish I had the skills to do it myself, but that is something I knew I could not pull off. Just like the bodywork and paint. I do not have the skill or the patience to do the bodywork that my truck needed. So again, I had to dive into the bank account for that. But it is what it is. There was plenty I did myself on the truck that I can take pride in, just as there is on every one of our trucks. Those things are what make our trucks special.

As for a SoCal meet up... We did that about 4 years ago at a cruise night and 5 members showed up. I would be down for doing it again. Maybe a Bob's Big Boy night down in the valley or something. I plan to put my truck in the F100 Nationals show next summer down in Orange County and think it would be great if a bunch of SoCal Fordification members showed up. There are trucks of ALL conditions in that show, so it does not matter where you are with your truck, all old Ford trucks are welcome and all types show up. I went to the show this past summer (without my truck) and there were only 3 bumpsides in the whole show. We could enter as a club and all park together... Hell, I will kick down the Bumpsiders plaques for anyone that puts their truck in! :D

Anyway, thanks again for the post and compliments. I appreciate all of the feedback I have gotten over the past 3 years!

Dropped the crew off at the body shop on Monday and just picked it up today. They fixed the two big scratches I put in the truck during re-assembly. The one on the driver's door that the EZ-up caused and I documented earlier, and then another one on the passenger side cowl that happened when the mirror was pushed forward and someone (not me) opened the door. The mirror took a thick gouge out of the paint on the cowl. I did not photo it or document it but it was there. Anyway, they fixed both of them for me and tried to not charge me. That was not going to fly as they already gave me a great deal on the original job. So I forced a tip down their throat. I am happy that the main scratches are out now. They also hooked me up with some leftover paint so I can do touch-ups as they are needed.

So no one needs to look back, here is where the scratch was on the driver's door when the EZ-up took flight:
Image

And here is the same spot after paint (the lower mirror bracket went right over the middle of the scratch):
Image

So not much left to do. I still need to get the AC lines evacuated and the system charged, and I still need to install the rubber piece between the cowl and hood. Then down the road, tinted windows, polished wheels, and maybe some rear speakers. Also the intake manifold leak and power steering box leak. But that is all there is at this point. Otherwise, it is just drive it and enjoy it and spend a ton of money on gasoline. :D

Awesome, what a great feeling it is to be able to just enjoy your ride! You deserve the chance to just drive that beast and when you feel like it, you can tinker on the little things. Congrats on your project!

Man, that is an awesome accomplishment! That is a LOT of work done in a small time! You definitely have more determination and drive to work on yours than I do on mine. I still have yet to finish my A/C, among other things. The enjoyment of driving it does get in the way though:)

I have a question about your rear wheel stud install. What process did you use? Hammer or press? What studs? I need to replace all of mine on both sides with longer ones. I have the studs(Dorman for a dually), but I have read that they need to be cut/reamed on the top before driving out. Was that the case for you?
