To trade or not to trade?

Post by sargentrs »

My Fairlane has been a great car for me the past 2 years but I really want something a little sportier, preferably a Falcon, Comet, Torino or Mustang, 1st or 2nd gen, 2 door, small block, manual tranny. Trying to trade her even up for something in daily driver condition. But every day I pass this house on the way to work. In the driveway sits a '68 F100 flare side. Today I couldn't stand it anymore and pulled into the driveway to talk to the guy. Its been lowered by cutting about half a front coil and rear hanger flip. Freshly rebuilt 240 I6, bored .040 over, with Offy intake, 2 barrel carb and headers. Rebuilt 3.03 3spd with column shift and fresh clutch. Overall in good condition with clear coated "patina". Wood bed floor is gone with sheet steel tacked in place. Doors shut good n tight. Has "Big Daddy's Garage Est. 1971 hand painted in script on the doors. Stock steel k wheels painted a lime green. Says he bought it that way. Everything works. He already has 2 other newer Ford trucks and is looking for car for his wife. He sent her some photos of the F'lane to see if she's interested. What do you think guys, would you trade?

If i only had one f100 and one fairlane, id keep them. 289s are great motors, and you already have a pickup?

I also think the flaresides look out of place on the bumpsides, dont flow at all with the cab. For how good of a job they did on the stylesides, it always confused me how for 20 years they refused to modernize the rear fenders to even PRETEND to have some styling cues that tied them to the rest of the truck...

GM may have been lazy and kept reusing the box and tailgate, but at least they would change the rear fenders to keep with the style ques of the rest of the truck after one, maybe two body designs... not 4 or 5 lol...

they always looked out of place to me, the 53-56 body flowed SOOOO good with the bed. but thats because it was designed for it lol... when did they finally stop using that bed? 79? that is like 20 years too long...

Edit: I want to add you came to a bump forum to ask, i bet if you go to your galaxy forum to ask you may get a different preservative...

'64's a 4 door right? Flare side f150 is sportier than a 4 door. I'd consider it for a CV swap and newer drive train. Make it handle like it's on rails and enjoy the bejesus out of it. After running my car for a while I'd recommend also looking at a 2003 and up Jaguar S type, an R if you can find one. The 420hp \\R's are ridiculously undervalued hot rods. Similar drive train to my XKR just in a smaller 4 door chassis.

If he trades me it's going to real hard not to do a frame swap on my project truck and have all my goodies I've already invested in on the flare side 8)

I have a soft spot for flairside Ford trucks. Plus it's a bump! That thing would already be in my driveway. Lowered down with some stock steelies and fat tires in the back. Maybe some bucket seats with a flip up center console seat in the middle. Makes me moist just thinking about it! Sounds like a fun lil project to me. In the end, you need to do what's best for you, but I'd be all over that swap :D

Nope. Guy with the flare side hasn't contacted me back yet. Stopped to check out a '69 Montego the other day but it was too far gone to mess with. Also checked out a '49 panel truck, not in the greatest shape, about a 7/10 but driveable but that guy thought it was worth more than it was. Not in a hurry so I can wait for the right deal. :D

Looked at this yesterday and the guy was possibly interested in a trade. It's a '79 Ranchero Brougham with the 351M. Don't know that I can afford to drive that sucker on my daily commute.

Also trying to get in touch with this guy. It's a '74 AMC Javelin. Always been one of my favorite cars it's just really hard to get parts for. https://atlanta.craigslist.org/wat/cto/6129651572.html

351m would kill it for me. Orphaned engine design. Should get 15 ish MPG if it's tuned well and isn't run hard.

Yeah, that was my thinking too Jamie. When I saw it I was hoping for a 351w.

That and the fact it is hideous ... I mean that in the nicest possible way but that body style has never done anything at all for me...
