Bumpside?? When did this happen??

Post by Biggu »

Hey guys, I see that everyone is calling the 'non step' side " Bump sides" When did this happen? The '68 in our yard has been in our family since September of '68 and I was always under the impression they were advertised by Ford as "Style Side" where as Chevrolet was "Fleet Side" and Dodge was "Swept Line"............ did I miss something here or is it just evolution? To me "Style Side" sounds much more classy than 'Bump Side".....just curious..... Jeff

Style side is correct. Just called bump side. As the 73 - 79 are called dent sides.

'61-'66 = "Slick"
'67-'72 = "Bump Side"
''73-79 = "Dent Side"
'80's = "Bull Nose"

Style side and Flare side are Ford body styles, Fleet side and Step side are Chebbie.

I think you are confusing the type of truck and the style of truck boxes. All 67-72 trucks are called bumbsides. You can have two types of boxes style side or flareside. Also bumpside is not a Ford sanctioned name. Came to be by Ford enthusiasts.

Bumpside is a colloquialism for 67-72s just as Dentside is for the 73-79s.

The vernacular reference is waaaay easier than saying "67-72 F-Series" or "Fifth Generation"..

Other Ford vs Chevy/GM differences include....
- Styleside vs Fleetside
- Flareside vs Stepside
- Traction Lock vs Positraction
- Period Correct vs Numbers Matching
... and patina vsrRust. Lol.

When I first started owning these trucks I hated the bumbside name. As time went on it grew on me now I love it.

Well, I hear you all, but personally I like the old school ways sometimes, and I will stick with Style side, as it sounds classy, Bump sides, sounds like we were 'clumsy' with our trucks, but that is JUST me.....anyway, all that aside, I'm glad to be here with you all....and I do like my old Ford very much, she is fun to drive even with " Arm Strong " steering....

Biggu, I don't think you are understanding completely. A bumpside can be either a styleside or a fleetside, bumpside is referring to the bump that protrudes the entire side of the truck in the 1967-72 body style (not just the bed). A fleetside is any Ford truck that is NOT a stepside...regardless of the year.
If you have a 1967-72 style side....you have a bumpside style side.....or a styleside bump.

Putting the bed side style (fleet or style) in the same sentence as the body style (bump) doesn't typically happen as it sounds weird.
Simply put, you own a bumpside with a styleside bed.

When I bought my truck about 15 years ago they weren't called "bumpside", and I dont call them that.
Somewhere along the line when people started picking up these trucks, along came the name. Maybe its one of those '80s generation things, I don't know.

Got it. It's got a "bump" along the sides of the truck I guess. It is a little goofy.
Fordification takes the credit for assigning that nickname to these trucks.
